About this product

Product Information

FROM THE #1NEW YORK TIMESBESTSELLING AUTHOR OF JOHN ADAMSAt the end of the last century, Johnstown, Pennsylvania was a booming coal-and-steel town filled with hardworking families striving for a piece of the nation's burgeoning industrial prosperity. In the mountains above Johnstown, an old earth dam had been hastily rebuilt to create a lake for an exclusive summer resort patronized by the tycoons of that same industrial prosperity, among them Andrew Carnegie, Henry Clay Frick, and Andrew Mellon. Despite repeated warnings of possible danger, nothing was done about the dam. Then came May 31, 1889, when the dam burst, sending a wall of water thundering down the mountain, smashing through Johnstown, and killing more than 2,000 people. It was a tragedy that became a national scandal.Graced by David McCullough's remarkable gift for writing richly textured, sympathetic social history,The Johnstown Floodis an absorbing portrait of life in nineteenth-century America, of overweening confidence, of energy, and of tragedy. This is a powerful historical lesson for our century and all times: the danger of assuming that because people are in positions of responsibility they are behaving responsibly.

Reviews
The New Yorker A first rate example of the documentary method....Mr. McCullough is a good writer and painstaking reporter and he has re-created that now almost mythic cataclysm...with the thoroughness the subject demands., Book World McCullough has resurrected the flood for a generation that may know it in name only. He proves the subject is still fresh and spectacular.

This is an outstanding seller to deal with. Fair prices that are more than reasonable in this economy. The product is even better condition than described, a true value for my money. Packaged and shipped well shows seller has concern for the products he sells to arrive in excellent condition. The seller is friendly and communicates timely with his customers. All in all I highly recommend this seller and would do business again anytime. Thank you and be safe. Good luck to the future.

  • Johnstown Flood by McCullough

McCullough along with Mitchener are my favorite authors. Anyone driving long distance and has a cassette/CD Radio, the Cassette tape The story is excellent and interesting, and great for a history You will love the audio and beats listening to the music or talk radio. Completely enjoyable. The audio depicts American as it turns 100 years old, 1889, hardly ever depicted in the history books. Now 120 years later, it is always fun to look back and wonder what life was like to put our current life in perspective. If you loved McCullough's other books such as 1776, the book is in the same tradition. I wish there are more historical books on audio tape.

  • Another great book from McCullough

The book grabed my interest and never let it go. I bought the book on CD to listen to in the car. I found myself not wanting to end my trip until the book was over. History told well makes a great story. I have listened to it several times and I will again.
