About this product

Product Information

Fashion Fibers: Designing for Sustainability is an accessible reference tool for fashion students and designers who want to learn how to make decisions to enhance the sustainability potential in common fibers used in the fashion industry. Drawing upon the cradle to cradle philosophy and industry expertise, the book introduces readers to the fundamentals of fiber production and the product lifecycle. It features a fiber-by-fiber guide to natural fibers including cotton, hemp, silk, manufactured fibers including polyester, modal, azlon, then covers processing and promoting recycled fibers that are designed to be "circular". Each chapters investigates six main areas of potential impact in fiber cultivation, production, and processing-including chemical use, water, fair labor, energy use, consumer use/washing and biodegradability and recyclability. Readers will learn about the sustainability benefits and environmental impacts at each stage of the lifecycle, optimizing sustainability benefits, availability, product applications, and marketing and innovation opportunities that lead to more sustainable fashion. Features - Future Fibers sections highlight emerging fiber technologies and innovations such as new virgin-quality apparel fibers that have been recycled from post-consumer textile waste - Emphasizes application through examples and images of product end use - Discusses closed loop material systems that enable the recycling of fibers - Innovation Exercises offer readers practice designing or merchandising fashion products to optimize sustainability benefits - Foreword by Lynda Grose, Designer and Educator, California College of the Arts, US STUDIO RESOURCES - Study smarter with self-quizzes featuring scored results and personalized study tips - Review concepts with flashcards of terms and definitions - Enhance your knowledge with real-world case studies PLEASE NOTE: Purchasing or renting this ISBN does not include access to the STUDIO resources that accompany this text. Reviews
This book aims to disrupt this cycle of not knowing and to spark agency in its readers. Written in accessible language, and arranged in an easy to understand fiber lifecycle format, each chapter leads the reader through a range of issues from harvesting and extraction of raw material to consumer care and disposal options. In doing so, Gullingsrud breaks down the 'natural is good and synthetics are bad' stereotypes and helps the reader to realize that all fibers have impacts in a concentrated industrialized fashion system. This book also provides basic information that can be used to shape informed questions of processors and companies, leading to wider disclosures...and since designers and wearers both provide the market for industrial textile supply chains we can be catalysts for new developments. As one might expect from a designer, besides providing practical technical information, Gullingsrud also suggests creative responses relevant to the specific impacts of each fiber. She identifies points of impact not as restrictions but as points of intervention and rich sources for innovation. In short, the author presents an optimistic view of fashion and textile sustainability and equips designers and consumers with knowledge to take action.
