The sequel to the spy shooter Syphon Filter, Syphon Filter 2 features two main characters, Gabe Logan and Lian Xing, who are required to stop the sale of the Syphon Filter (the world's deadliest weapon) to an enemy nation. Starting off as prisoners, they must escape and prove their innocence to the world. Much like Metal Gear Solid, several plot twists and conspiracies are to be expected. Now, rather than just one character, you are given a second commando to work with. Lian Xing brings with her new weapons and is playable on no less than eight of the games 20-plus levels spanning three unique environments. The levels are designed to be larger and more detailed than the previous version. Two-player deathmatches are now part of the campaign and offer a new style of play to Syphon Filter fans. Deathmatches can be played on each of the game's levels and there are 28 characters to choose from (a la GoldenEye 007), in an effort to enhance the replay value of the game. Eidetic and 989 Studios have included an array of weapons this time around, offering even more firepower than in the original (25 weapons in all). An M16 assault rifle, flamethrower, silenced 9mm, handguns, sniper rifles, automatic shotguns, M79 grenade launcher, night vision rifle, tear gas, crossbow, and a combat knife are all at your disposal. Rather than saving the game at the completion of each level, save points have been incorporated throughout. Each level is bigger and more detailed than in the first version and this addition of save points will undoubtedly prove itself important. New targeting modes are available to make it a bit more convenient to blast commandos while running for cover. Default, manual, and target lock modes will increase or decrease the amount of control you have over your character's aiming, allowing both novice and advanced gamers to customize the gameplay experience. Bosses, as in the first Syphon Filter, were designed to be bigger and meaner than ever. Now that the new targeting and save systems have been implemented, players can save the game close to these encounters, lock onto the target with their weapon's crosshairs, then roll, climb, or run about in hopes of destroying the enemy forces. Syphon Filter 2 features the same game engine as that of the original (as most would expect being a sequel), and includes support for analog control, vibration feedback, and the memory card to save progress and unlocked characters.

Great sequel to an essential PS1 title
If you're a fan of classic PS1 games, then the first two Syphon Filter games are essential for your collection. The sequel takes the cake for design though. The mechanics are more fleshed out, rather than being a gimmicky sequel (I was very happy to see that they didn't try to add vehicle levels, for instance)

Great sequel to the original game
It gave great shoot-em up gameplay mixed with with a touch of stealth. For its time, it even rivaled metal gear solid. So now here comes the sequal, and is it any better? Yes and no. Yes, its better, but only slightly. This might actually be considered Syphon Filter 1.5, since it has only slight improvements over the orginal. Now you control Lian as well as Gabe (she is identical to Gabe in combat ability believe it or not), and each has thier own missions. Graphics are still sharp, though they seems less colorful this time around. Gameplay is still amazingly inventive, and fun to play. Lian in the early stages seems more geared towards stealth, while gabe gets to gun down more people. personally, i think its great, but is still missing some things. The new voice for Lian also doesnt seem to fit her character, and I miss the old on. Thie orginal Gabe voice is back, thank god. Mara Aramov (from the orginal) has now bleached her hair blond (she was a better Redhead) and taken a more active role. Goody, now I can gun her down... i hope. Speaking of guns, there is not a lot more of them, From Cross bows to knives (for hand to hand) to new automatics, The guns are plentyful. You're sometimes gaive a LOT more options on how to kill someone, which is fine by me. also new is a 2 player mode! This is a fun kill fest that is easily customizable. Kinda like a Syphon Filter version of Goldeneye's battles. My only complaint in this mode is that the arenas are smaller than they should be in some cases. But it takes Syphon Filter to a whole new ball game with this! HOORAY! Shooting people has never been this much fun. Its a worthy purchase, ESPECIALLY if you are a fan of the orginal. Now excuse me, i have to go kill some annoying guards. Graphics-9. Slightly less colorful than the orgianl, giving it a slightly gritty feel. Camera-10. Thank god they kept this in tact. Controls-10. I dont understand why people have so many problems with the controls, they are much better than any other 3rd personal game i can think of. From RE to TR, this game beats em all. gameplay-8. Same old same old, though in this case, its like driving a classic corvette rather than a used for escort. A bit more emphasis on stealth than the orginal. replayability-9. Heck I have to play thru again just to unlock some of the cool stuff in MP mode! Overall-9. Kick butt!

Great multiplayer for Playstation
Reviewer's age: 27 I was probably 19 or younger when the game was released. It is one of the best Multiplayer Shooter games for the Playstation. It was great for that aspect, and would be great if reproduced, new features and maps, for online multiplayer today. You could sit back to this game and battle your friends for hours on end.. late night. It's probably not good now compared to all the PS2 has to offer. I still have the game, but I don't ever put it in the PS2. Anticipating a new release.. and the Omega Strain does not do Syphon Filter any justice.
