About this product

Product Information

Amlie Poulain (Audrey Tautou) is a young woman who glides through the streets of Paris as quietly as a mouse. With wide eyes and a tiny grin, she sees the world in a magical light, discovering minor miracles every day. A shy and reserved person whose favorite moments are spent alone skimming stones into the water, Amlie was raised by a pair of eccentrics who falsely diagnosed her with a heart problem at the age of six and so limited her exposure to the outside world. Now a free and independent woman, Amlie wears a bob that curls in every direction and dresses in red. With a job in a caf and an aptitude for spying on her neighbors, Amlie entertains herself by enacting a series of homemade, kindhearted practical jokes. She returns a long-forgotten box of childhood knickknacks to its proper owner, she sends her father's garden troll on a trip around the world, and she creates a love connection at the caf between the hypochondriac druggist and a beer-drinking old grouch. But when the day is done, Amlie finds one stone unturned, and decides to work her magic on the quirky object of her affections, Nino Quincampoix (Matthieu Kassovitz), whom she has never met.Director Jean-Pierre Jeunet (who codirected DELICATESSEN and THE CITY OF LOST CHILDREN with Marc Caro) presents AMLIE, an aesthetically gorgeous and inventive film. The rich, glowing color scheme is offset by flashbacks in black and white archival footage that give short biographies of each character. A soft-spoken narrator guides viewers through this enlightening fairy tale, which sometimes speeds through the streets and other times drifts in slow motion. AMLIE is humorous, questioning, and strange, and it will change the lives of all who watch it, if only for a short while after leaving Amlie's world.

Awesome lightheated movie with a beautiful message.

This is a wonderful foriegn film with subtitles unless you speak french but no worries....you will be able to follow it and it will become one of your favorite movies. It does something that most movies fail to do. It has a beautiful message. It shows an act of kindness that makes this a feel good movie you will want to watch again. I originally rented it because I like foreign films with subtitles and the smiling Amelie looked so French with that smile it intrigued me to read the jacket. I really enjoyed watching it so much I decided to buy it because it made me feel good and plus it was very humorous to boot. If you watch only one foriegn film in your life...this should be it. There is a reason why it got 5 Academy award nominations and it definitely is well deserving. It is a ...

  • Enchanting!!!

There is nothing I disliked about the movie. It's perfection pictured on the screen. I can't describe why. Everything is a piece that contributes to make the movie one of the best in French if not World cinematography. Audrey Tautou is endearing as the lone and good-hearted Amélie, as well as Mathieu Kassowitz as the day dreamer guy. There is magic in the air, but everything is subtle. The special effects are like a cherry on the top of the cake. A modern fairy tale story that makes us feel light hearted and wonder what we have been doing to let the simplest things in life pass unnoticed. What more could you expect from a movie in addition to leaving you a good feeling in a very european way? Reality? That one we get in the every-day life. Amélie is superb!!!

  • The Fabulous Journey of Amelie Poulain

A slice of delight, right here on earth. Amelie is a joy to behold, and has some of the most beautiful cinematography I've ever seen in a movie or otherwise. Audrey Tatou is perfect, appearing as Amelie. A combination of Audrey Hepburn and Roger Rabbit, she involves herself in the world surrounding her as a means of really enjoying life itself. There are moments when she finds complete and total peace and happiness just walking down the street. Some of it extremely funny, too..like when her pet goldfish tries time after time to commit suicide, or when she is on the telephone with the man at the XXX shop, or when a character is asked "Are you a congenital shmuck"? Amelie is a comedy about being human, never forgetting about love, of course.

  • Many Excellent Reviews. Read them.

There are some excellent reviews, well written, that I would encourage you to read! Even though I don't speak French, I followed the movie easily. However, since I don't speak French, I understand I missed many intended plays on words (mer, mere).

  • Utterly Charming Movie I Can't Wait to See Again!

I first heard of Amelie from Meghan in her Stitch It knitting podcast. She highly recommends the movie and has seen it numerous times. Now I'm addicted. A highly imaginative introvert sets out to bring more joy to the lives of those around her, choosing quirky circuitous stratagems to accomplish her secret goals. The movie is in French with English subtitles, but you forget that within minutes because the story is so involving. If you like the kind of movie you think about for the next day or more, with a cute and charming lead character and a bit of romance, this one's for you. Now excuse me, I'm going to go watch it again right now!
