About this product

Product Information

Covering 31 North American species, with more than 250 color photos and 33 maps, this is the most comprehensive field guide to hummingbirds. Introductory chapters cover the natural history of hummingbirds, ways to attract and feed them, and major hot spots in the United States and Canada for observing these fascinating birds. The 31 color plates illustrate 28 species, 7 hybrid combinations, 3 forms of albinism, and 4 species of sphinx moths often mistaken for hummingbirds. Species accounts provide in-depth information on plumage, molt, songs and calls, wing sounds, similar species, behavior, habitat, distribution, taxonomy, and conservation concerns. Detailed, up-to-date range maps show breeding, non-breeding, and year-round distribution, migration routes, and records outside expected areas of occurrence. For a few widespread migratory species, separate maps illustrate expected spring arrival dates.

If I needed another magazine, I would buy it from this seller. The price was great, and the item arrived in excellent condition. The seller was very careful in the way the magazine was boxed. I appreciate a caring, careful and safe packaged item. I recommend this seller to the other magazine collectors in America. From a very happy buyer.

  • Lots of information

It is a very complete guide to hummingbirds. There is a section discussing in detail, with lots of photos, the physical attributes of each species, the unique attributes of wings and tails, with comparison photos. It includes species intergrades. Another section of the book has a full description, range map and migration timing map for each species so you can see what to expect at any time of year. My only complaint is the organization is confusing, as are the plate numbers and page numbering. I have a hard time looking things up, especially because I have to look in two disconnected places to find all the information about one species. I owned this book in the past, gave it to someone years ago, and then when I became interested again in hummingbirds, I looked specifically for this ...

  • The Perfect Book for Hummingbird Lovers

I would like to recommend this book to all hummingbird lovers out there. I have always liked hummingbirds, but I became increasingly interested in them when I noticed they were building a nest in my patio. This is one of the very best books written on the subject with a lot of interesting information. One of the things I like the most about this book is the huge amount of photographs of hummingbirds showing the differences between different species. The other thing I like is that the book is small and sturdy. It is the perfect size to take when you go for a hike or a nature walk.

  • Hummers enjoyed by all

A very comprehensive guide, with a number of different ways to identify the species, using color photographs.Quite a bit of life history and useful information. One of the things I noticed right away, being used to using a guide to identify insects,is that hummingbirds are all similar in appearance, for the most part, and the books notes this and has done a thorough job of depicting the birds in many different views, such as heads, tails, body, etc,,the various methods being separated by sections in the book.

  • Accurate, compact and useful -- as any Peterson Field Guide publication is.

The perfect resource guide for a novice (or even a bit seasoned bird lover) regarding all things hummingbirds! Made a nice BD gift for my bird-loving husband!
