About this product
Product Information
Pilotwings 64, the second game to appear on the Nintendo 64, is the 64-bit sequel to Shigeru Miyamoto's classic Super NES flight simulation game. Like the original Pilotwings, you must master different vehicles and reach certain goals to achieve flight licenses. That being said, Pilotwings 64 is not a real flight simulation in the sense of what's usually seen on computers; rather, it's more of an event-based game with emphasis on adventure and fun.

Three main vehicles and four bonus vehicles are at your command. The Hang Glider and Rocket Belt are making return appearances and the brand-new Gyrocopter is the third one. There are also four bonus vehicles: Human Cannonball, Sky Diving, Jumble Hopper, and Bird Man. The Light Plane from the original game has been replaced with the Gyrocopter, and the Sky Diving portion has been reduced to a bonus vehicle and is no longer a main event.

The goal in Pilotwings 64 is to get a bronze or better for all three vehicles in each class. For each flight you take, you are rated on a scale of 1 to 100. Depending on the vehicle, you are rated in different categories such as Accuracy, Time, Angle and Beam/Ring.

Pilotwings 64 doesn't have much in the way of options, except there is a built-in EEPROM chip to save the progress of two games. The game also lets you take a limited number of "pictures" while playing, which will remind you of places you've been later in the game, and these are saved to the cartridge as well.

Differences between the Japanese and American versions are negligible. The American version fixes a graphic glitch or two, and Robin is known as "Hooter" in the Japanese edition. Be forewarned, though: The game is heavy on text and could present problems if the player is not fluent in Japanese.
