About this product

Product Information

RAD: Robot Alchemic Drive is an anime-inspired shooter starring 70-ton bipedal robots (called Meganites) that must battle their way across fully destructible urban environments. Unlike most games in the genre, players help guide the robot using a teenage character running along the ground. Pressing a button instantly switches control between the robot and teen, allowing the human character to scout ahead and locate potential trouble. An alien force has besieged the planet, dropping beast-like robots called Volgara throughout the city in an effort to wreak as much havoc and mayhem as possible.

Four modes of play include Story, Tutorial, Challenge, and Versus Mode. Story offers players a chance to guide their character and robot through over 50 missions or episodes, learning more about the mysterious threat as they progress. Tutorial lets players practice the unusual control scheme in two missions designed to familiarize them with walking, punching, and firing at different targets. Challenge lets players revisit past episodes unlocked during Story mode to practice various battle techniques and strategies. Versus Mode lets two players battle it out on a split screen, with adjustable parameters in locale, heroes, robots, and controls.

Before beginning the game, players choose which of the three characters they would like to portray: Naoto Tsukioka, Ryo Tsukioka, and Yui Tsukioka. The choice of character not only dictates the storyline, but also influences the type of robot players will command. One can transform into a plane, another switches into a tank, while the third uses its fists as projectiles. Missiles, lasers, and other weapons are also available, and each robot can be further customized with additional parts. Fans of Cowboy Bebop may recognize the character designs, which were drawn by show creator Toshihiro Kawamoto.

    Unique gameplay, super fun!!!!

I remember playing the demo for this game back when I was a kid and rembering how fun it was, it is still a great game with unique gameplay The quality of the box and game disk is great, as if no one has put it into a PS2 yet, overall the game is amazing and if you love giant robots fighting this game is amazing!!!!!

  • Rare early PS2 Game

Published by Enix (now merged Square Enix) & Highly under-rated. Designed by the character designer of Cowboy Bebop Toshihiro Kawamoto. Compelling story with Unique gameplay that was pretty ambitious for it's time but executed wonderfully.

  • A Fun, Hard to Find, Game

Robot Alchemic Drive or RAD is a PS2 game where you pilot a building size robot called a Meganite. These are human controlled battle machines which fight against similarly sized invaders. The catch is that the Meganites are controlled remotely by a device which looks like a PS2 controller. In the game you are constantly controlling both your human operator and the Meganite which can get confusing but is also very fun. The humans are pretty easy to control using the d-pad and face buttons but the use of the shoulder buttons and analog sticks to control the Meganite makes them awkward but then again shouldn't something that big be at least a little hard to control? I haven't gotten much past the tutorial but the game does look like it will be very fun, and unique, to play.

  • Best giant robot game ever!

I heard about this game years ago and was finally able to find a copy on eBay. It's pretty much how I always imagined a game involving giant robots would play. The use of the human character as the 'camera' was also an original concept, so you'd have to switch between him and the Meganite every so often to get the best vantage point to watch this battle of the titans. The control scheme took a while to get used to but soon enough it became second nature to use the shoulder buttons to walk and the analog sticks to throw punches...in essence, you really feel like you're controlling a massive robot and pounding its opponent into oblivion. Only real criticisms involve the voice acting and that you can't skip some of the tedious cinematics (only fast forward through them), but they're minor ...

  • Giant Robots Rock!

what i like most about this game is the control, which may seem kind of strange at first, but you get used to it. basicly this game is about destroying giant alien robots useing your choice of three different mechs. Each mech has the ability to transform, and each one has different weapons. it has a good story, that can at times have too much talking, fortunately you can fast-forward through if you dont want to listen. if you liked the demo, you will like the game.
