Adrift in space, space opera
The Starlost had an interesting premise, interesting character a few good episodes and a few bad ones. The good: Some of its memorable episodes are Voyage of Discovery, Lazarus from the Mist, (which set up the series nicely) The Goddess Calabra, which guest stars the late great John Calicos, Circuit of Death, which starred another late great, Percy Rodriguez (an episode which also predates the Matrix by 27 years), The Alien Oro guest-starring Walter Koenig, without his pseudo-Russian accent, and Mr. Smith of Manchester, which is probably one of the darker episodes of the series. It's also worth noting that Keir Dullea of 2001 ASO fame stars as the main role in hippy hair! The bad: the series quickly betrays its own premise. This is especially when the crew encounter people in the spaceship who are aware that they are aboard one, and have the means to save the ship but never do. For example, in the episode The Pisces, members of the original crew return to the Earthship Arc and never give a hint as to where the series MacGuffin's location is. It probably would have been better if the passengers of the ship didn't know they were on a spacecraft as originally planned. Overall: While not the greatest sci-fi series released after Star Trek, it had a lot of ideas that would shape future science fiction tv shows and movies such as Babylon 5, (given that the latter show had Harlon Ellison as a creative consultant and that he created the series) especially with the series taking place in one location as a sci-fi series. The show has its ups and downs, however, it can be a lot of fun and is an interesting piece of science fiction television history.

This DVD set contains all sixteen episodes of this obscure series from 1973, as well as the presentation film offered to local stations interested in purchasing the series for syndication. The program itself has its faults, (such as limited production values and weak special effects.) I was surprised to find that the series is not nearly as bad as its reputation. The guest cast contains some wonderful and interesting actors, such as Sterling Hayden and John Colicos. The stories have their faults, but there is some imagination on display. The show should be compared with the original "Land of the Lost" or the original "Tomorrow People." In that category the series has something to offer. As for the DVD itself, the transfers and sound quality are pretty good for a program ... GREAT SHOW! Any TRUE Trekkie will LOVE IT!
Even though this show seems to be low budget, the stories and characters are AMAZING! I was so surprised and was immediately hooked! The other thing I LOVE about the series is the background music! It's from STRANGE PARADISE! I get so sick of shows with all that tense music all the time! This music has SOME tension, but it's still relaxing and it's music you could meditate to! It's WONDERFUL! This show reminds me A LITTLE BIT of Star Trek, where every episode is a completely new adventure. Also there are quite a few famous guest stars in it as well! (Walter Koenig - Star Trek's "Pavel Chekov" - being one!) Anyway - the whole idea is BRILLIANT! It makes one think - is the Earth just some advanced SPACE SHIP/ARK...?Even though this show seems to be low budget, the stories and characters are AMAZING! Poorly written, acted, and a VERY bad space soap opera. Save your money, time and effort. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 great and 1 very bad I rate this a -2. People should be warned how poor this production is. I could not finish the first disc!!! If someone had warned me, I would not have purchased!!!

Cool old sci fi show.
Remember this from my childhood, pretty good for pre star wars series, typically cheesey 70's style, but imaginative for the day. Worth a watch for vintage sci fi buffs.
