After the years of fighting with no quarter given by either Germans or Russians, it was inevitable that the victors would show no mercy to the vanquished at the end. Even so the savagery of the Russian Armies as they closed on Berlin reached new levels of barbaric behaviour and devastation. Little was left of the city and those who survived suffered terribly at the hands of an enemy bent on revenge, looting and pillage.
