Great story a precursor to our war in Viet-Nam!

Great Story in the fight against communism, I knew a Waffen SS Sargent who said the French came to his POW camp after the war looking for Volunteers for this Legion, The ones who did Volunteer were the guys who could not return home because the Russian Communists occupied their home areas!

  • Great read, but not sure it’s history?

While I did enjoy the read, there’s not much available in English about the French Indochina war other than Dien Bien Phu, the content had more feel of a novel. Everything goes too perfectly. As a combat veteran it left me with impression a read a novel. They wipe out entire units with what sounds like minimal causalities. Characters fit smoothly into archetypes. You get the idea. It also feeds into the myth that the war was fought primarily by the Foreign Legion made up German Wehrmacht and SS combat veterans. What little I have found dispelled that common held view. So what I saying is that if you’re goal is factual history as seen from a combatant you’ll likely be disappointed. If you want to enjoy good quick read with a lot of action then this book is for you. The reason I gave four ...

  • A good study of tactical "Warfare" for the student.

Quite an amazing tail. It just goes to show that if you are willing to do what needs to be done you can win on a tactical level. The brave germans have been doing that from Waterloo to the gates of Stalingrad to Vietnam.

  • So true you wont believe it!

I and my Brother both read this book as young teens screaming ALLAH AKBAR jumping into rivers etc like the Soldier did in Russia. The poisoning of the Vet Minh village make scare readers but they had fought Communism for 10 years!

  • A truly fascinating reality check

If you have any interest in freedom of thought, then you have to read this book. In the modern world of cocaine-ego-fueled fake personalities, many people would prefer to believe that the Germans are a cold and even heartless people, yet the truth is that they are the amongst the most capable and intelligent people on this planet. The truth hurts, so they say... face your demons and you will see that sometimes we create barriers without real reason. Read this book. I dare you.
