Nikon Nikkor 200mm F/2G AF-S VR Lens - an outstanding low light performer
Here's my initial take on the Nikon Nikkor 200mm F/2G AF-S VR Lens. To start off, I bought this lens to use for low-light indoor situations. An example would be certain church presentations where the lights are dimmed down. My only minor pet peeve with this particular lens is it's rather dinky tripod mount. Again, this is a minor issue. If hand holding is a must, either grip the lens close to the front, or get a RRS compatible replacement foot for better gripping. Now, what do I like about this lens? Pretty much everything, really. It lets in light like there's no tomorrow. Focusing is lightening fast. The focusing ring is big and very easy to handle. Oddly enough, I also appreciate the stubby profile of this lens. Some folks also complain about the weight of this lens. Yeah, it is heavy, but not back breaking like the 400, 500, and 600mm telephoto lenses are. To get used to hand holding the lens, I'd personally recommend starting off with a short session of about 5 to 10 minutes. Then work up to longer sessions. Shooting on a tripod is easy, since the lens is light enough to work on basically any type of mount. I've heard the lens is great for shooting video, though I haven't tried it yet. How would I compare this lens to the other superteles? I honestly can't, since I haven't shot with the bigger ones. Sure, I'd give the 200mm a leg up with it's f2.0 maximum aperture. Other than that, I'd suggest experimenting with the different telephoto lenses to see which one works best. In short, I recommend the Nikon Nikkor 200mm F/2G AF-S VR Lens to anyone looking for a moderately heavy, compact lens capable of letting in extra light for really low light situations.

It is funny...photography even after 35 years is still a passionate thing. You find yourself, mid-workflow, pausing to admire a shot that just got everything right...this is a feeling I have known since my first print appeared in the tray as a kid. It is why we do what we do, it is the sweet treat amid the noise of all the thousands of shots that were good, salable, but imminently forgettable. What I am telling you is this lens delivers a lot more of those moments to you. This thing just kills, period. Sharpness, contrast and saturation like 3D, bokeh of all lenses should be defined by this one...fast and quiet AF, has a memory recall setting, superb VR, internal filters, and a really great case. It can focus in nearly total darkness, I am not kidding. It is big and thick and heavy, and ... It is funny...photography even after 35 years is still a passionate thing. All of 10 lbs+ with the body, so at least a monopod is needed, I added a big RRS plate to the tripod foot for greater stability. Anyway I had rented this a few times, experienced more workflow pauses admiring the results, and found myself jonesing for these results on other shoots. Wide open, shooting a face full frame, the difference between the liquid crystal clear eyes and the bokeh melted and so even and smooth near the nape of the neck, hair and shoulders is wonderful... definitely a money shot. I honestly have gotten more client comments on the drama and impact of the images this amazing lense delivers than in any other single piece of gear I have owned in 35 years. It is not cheap, and Nikon does not make many of them, so they are tough to get... just rent one, and you will find yourself lining up to own one before you know it.

As with all good photography equipment, it does not come between your subject and your creative vision. The initial impressions you get is how short it is and how light it is. Lightweight should not be confused with shoddy construction. Indeed, think comfort and versatility. If you've ever had to hike or camp with a camera, you'll understand what I mean. This is a comfortable, versatile lens that you won't leave home.The lens is lightweight and short for such a range of focal lengths. Autofocus is quiet and snappy. Picture quality is great. Buying this legendary lens used is the best value ever! I was looking at the VR II version but I can’t justify the price difference. The 200 f2.0 VR1 and VRII is the same optical formula and nano Crystal coating may help a bit in bright light for ghosting and flare but no additional advantages in all other shooting conditions. Get yourself a used 200 f2.0 in good used condition you will never sell it as long as photography is your interest.Buying this legendary lens used is the best value ever!
