The Life, Politics & Art of Salvador Dalí 1904-1989
In the "Artists of the 20th Century" series, the artistic, life, political & social circumstance of Salvador Dalí are studied to learn how they led to his unique style of painting. Salvador Dalí (1904-1989) was a Spanish Catalan "Surrealist" painter. Dalí was born in Figueres. His skill as a draftsman is popular for "Surrealist" bizarre imagery. Dalí's painting was influenced by Renaissance masters. His most popular painting is "The Persistence of Memory" (1931). Dalí's artistic range is vast, including film, photography, sculpture & collaborative works with many artists using various media. Dalí's father, Salvador, was a lawyer & strict disciplinarian. Dalí's mother, Felipa Domenech Ferrés, encouraged his artistic efforts. When he was 5yo, Dalí's parents took him to his brother's grave. ... Dalí eventually believed them. Dalí went to a drawing school. In 1916, while on summer vacation with Ramon Pichot's family, a local artist, Dalí discovered modern painting. In 1917, Dalí's father exhibited his 13yo son's charcoal drawings in his home. In 1919, when Dalí was 15yo, his art was publicly exhibited for the 1st time at the Municipal Theater in Figueres. In 1922, Dalí moved to Madrid, into the Residencia de Estudiantes (Students' Residence). He studied at the Academia de San Fernando. Dalí was already eccentric looking: long haired with sideburns & dressed like late 19th century British aesthetes in long coats, stockings & knee breeches. Fellow students were taken by Dalí's "Cubist" paintings. Dalí learned about Cubism from magazines & brochures. In 1924, Dalí illustrated a book by a friend & classmate, poet Carles Fages de Climent, "Les bruixes de Llers" ("The Witches of Llers"). In 1926, Dalí was expelled just before final exams, for saying faculty member was competent to examine him. His 1926 painting "Basket of Bread" is flawlessly realistic. Dalí met Pablo Picasso in 1926, in Paris. Joan Miró had already raved about Dalí to Picasso. During the late 1920's, Dalí's paintings were obviously influenced by Picasso & Miró. Later, Dalí didn't just paint. He's 1 of the 1st artists to use holograms & optical illusions. Younger artists, like Andy Warhol, claimed Dalí influenced "Pop Art." In the 1950's, Dalí was into nature & mathematics & painted rhinoceros horns to symbolize "a divine geometry" that grew in logarythmic spirals. Rhinoceros themes symbolized chastity & virginity to Dalí. Fascinated by a hypercube, he painted an unfolding of a hypercube in "Crucifixion" ("Corpus Hypercubus"). In 1980, Dalí's health declined. His senile wife, Gala, dosed him with drugs that damaged his nervous system. His artistic capacity was compromised. At 76yo, Dalí's right hand was tremulous with Parkinson symptoms. In 1982, King Juan Carlos of Spain bestowed Dalí with the title Marquis of Púbol. After the king visited him on his deathbed, Dalí repaid him with a drawing, "Head of Europa," his final drawing. After Gala died in 1982, Dalí lost his will to live. He moved from Figueres to the castle in Púbol that he bought for Gala & was where she died. In 1984, a fire broke out in his bedroom, a possible suicide attempt. Dalí was rescued & returned to Figueres. In his final years, Dalí's friends, patrons & other artists made sure he lived comfortably in his Theater-Museum. In 1989, while "Tristan & Isolde," his favorite album played, 84yo Dalí died there of heart failure~
