Watchable. Enjoyable even. But not great.
If you think too much about some of the scenes, they don't make a lot of sense. It's like the director (who is also the antagonist) wanted some specific moments -- none of which are particularly special; standard spy-movie fare -- and only thought about how to set them up *just enough* that it would make sense at a first-take. But, if you suspend your disbelief, it's a fun movie to stuff some popcorn in your face to. This movie had me with the actors alone. To start with we have Chris Pine (Star Trek, Unstoppable with Denzel Washington), Keira Knightley who plays Cathy, Jack Ryan's fiance, Kevin Costner (Three Days To Kill), Kenneth Branagh who is the brains behind all the mayhem you will witness in the action thriller, and I also think he is a brilliant actor. This cast all works fantastic together and you move scene to scene but it is never rushed, but the movie does pick up speed but only as you would expect it to. Nothing is forced, Costner plays Jack Ryan's mentor and it works wonderfully. Jack Ryan starts off to finish his Phd as an analyst in finance, he sees a scene on the tv which makes him join the service, and this all happens in about two minutes, he gets hurt, then is recruited ... This is where the movie starts. They don't waste any time in the beginning getting Jack into his new role. I wont ruin the story, or the ending here. You have good action scenes, but not these silly five minute, eight minute car chases which kind of drives me nuts. Good fight scenes, the movie makes you think, and when you think you have it, it switches directions. There is one part I thought it was cool, it was a James Bond reference, it had to be. Jack, the main character, has to introduce himself, and he says "Ryan, Jack Ryan". Maybe it will be installments. So if you want to be entertained, if you like action movies, great writing, something different, and certainly A list actors, this is for you. I would not really compare it to other movies. I think if you just watch it for what it is, you will really love this movie. I like the movie most of all, because there is talking, there is several plot changes it seems, and it makes you think a little along with all the danger, and gun fights, and fight scenes. And some humor as well. You cant go wrong giving it a try. But If you don't like action movies, this is not for you. But I loved it because they did not go over the top with explosions just to have them. It was just a great movie. I was entertained. Enjoy....

Great story that gives context to the Tom Clancy universe of Jack Ryan. Definitely worthy of a view if you are into Military intrigue. Surely worth the price!
