  • The text doesn't live up to the title, although it might have. Sorry!

While this title sounds as though Ms Schaef is going to tackle the ways US culture is codependent -- must have people "hooked" in order to assure unflagging market demand -- she fails to take this on. Instead, she restricts her focus to just her training (as a therapist,) to only individual and family issues. I had hoped she would step beyond that role, because, as a writer, she had to interface with big business -- with the publishing industry. The power-relationship between an "unknown" (even a very talented, well-grounded "unknown,") and their publisher is usually as unbalanced as that of new teen driver to their parent with the car: the one has enthusiasm but no track-record, no independent resources, while the other has the power to decide, to give or to withhold, the new person's ...

  • How true! This IS where addiction comes from!!!!!

Addiction councelors like to believe that addiction is a mystery or a disease that just appears somehow, to the deviant of society. This book tells it like it really is. The truth is the apple never falls far from the tree. Our society is the prime example of addictive attributes. control freak, fear junkie, greed junkie, dirty, untrustworthy, ad finitum, ad nauseum. Is it any wonder there is so much crime, addiction, and so many more ills? For anyone truly struggling with addiction or working in the field, this is a must read book. I have personally taken it a step further, and found that the model for modern day society and government can be traced to modern day, war-mongering, religion of a fearful man god. Jehovah, as Zeus. the mother dead, impotent, or completely submissive. i ...

  • A perfect book for the helping profession.

This book is a must read for all in the helping profession. Before i read this book, I thought addictions had to do with substance abuse, sex, gambling, and other things that occupied a person to self destruction. I had no idea before reading this book that there are other process of addiction that can destroy a person's life. Now that I know all types of addictions, I can be of better service to those who are suffering from many addictions.

  • Information and Inspiration

I bought this book because I love Anne Wilson Schaef. She was way ahead of her time when she wrote most of her books and was criticized for it. She has been incredibly inspirational to me and others. I would recommend the book and anything else she has written! The books I buy are ones that I have read from the library and want to read again and again.
