Great Move, Lousy Picture Quality
The official title of this one is "Bruce Lee: the Man, the Myth." There were countless "biopics" that claimed to tell the life story of Lee, and most of them were hilariously awful, and worthless as biographies. However THIS movie is the real deal; it is by far the best of them all, telling a surprisingly accurate account of the life of the Martial Arts Master. It is chronologically accurate too, and is filmed on location, around the world, giving it an epic feel, and it obviously had a higher budget than those lesser films. The low score is most definitely not for the movie itself, but rather the shoddy product from 'VideoAsia." The picture quality is completely rotten, with zero attempt at any kind of restoration. What a disgrace. I was hoping that a company that claims to be Asian, would have a decent copy of this Chinese film at their disposal, and would finally release a decent print. Even the copy that aired on Cinemax was far superior than this lousy dvd, so it's not like a better quality print isn't out there. It's unacceptable in this day and age, to be producing and selling this kind of trash. What is it about the Kung fu genre that we can't get decent, restored prints of classic films? It seems like everything else is getting the Blu Ray restoration treatment, so why not martial arts films form the 70's/80's? Admittedly, many of these movies are junk, but among them are some truly excellent, and worthwhile works of cinematic art. The Chinese always filmed these movies, no matter how small the budget, with the super-wide lens, to capture the impressively choreographed fight scenes. Are these movies lost forever? Are the original prints destroyed? Or is it just that distributors don't think these movies are worth the time and money to restore? If that is the case, they are wrong, as this genre has a HUGE audience. There is a Blu Ray edition of "Bruce's Deadly Fingers" with Bruce Le, and it looks astounding. Let's hope that more Kung Fu titles will be rescued from obscurity.

They are the same film, but True Story offers an interview with lead actor Bruce Li and shows trailers of other films on the life of Bruce Lee that The Man- The Myth does not. I remember this film as being frequently shown on late night television 25 years ago and it was just as good as I remembered it. The film takes liberties with Bruce Lee's life and shows things that really did not happen, but it is very entertaining in the way it mixes Bruce Lee's real life with his myth and legend.
