Another Great Gottfredson Mickey Mouse collection from Fantagraphics
Fantagraphics does it again with stellar reproduction, class-A design and packaging of this new collection of classic Gottfredson Mickey strips that are certain to be an eye-opener when you pull it out as evidence that in the 1930's Mickey Mouse-- MICKEY MOUSE!!! FER CRYIN' OUT LOUD!!!--- was a comic-strip adventurer on a par with Alex Raymond's Flash Gordon or Hal Foster's Prince Valiant (or even Segar's Popeye!). As usual, the new volume suffers, as the previous tomes do as well, from over-density; there's just TOO MUCH in here to be easily digestible, and the formatting takes away somewhat from the straight-chronological playback of the Mick's adventures under Gottfredson's hand from A to Z. I will say, however, that the chronology is somewhat ... Fantagraphics does it again with stellar reproduction, class-A design and packaging of this new collection of classic Gottfredson Mickey strips that are certain to be an eye-opener when you pull it out as evidence that in the 1930's Mickey Mouse-- MICKEY MOUSE!!! I will say, however, that the chronology is somewhat less disjointed here than in earlier volumes, and that is of little concern to anyone who just wants to groove on the finely crafted (if baggy pants middlebrow, as was Disney's imprimatur) narrative, the beautiful linework, and the absoloutely furious storytelling chops Floyd Gottfredson brought to the Mickey Mouse strip.
