About this product

Product Information

A Deadly Chase on The Bering Sea Immerse yourself in crewman Spike Walker's Working on the Edge , an adrenaline-fueled narrative that brings to life the world of Alaskan king crab fishing. Set against the merciless backdrop of the turbulent Bering Sea, the book is a visceral account of human struggle, survival, and the dogged pursuit of fortune. Working on the Edge transports you to the wretched, unforgiving conditions of the Bering Sea with its icy winds, treacherous waves, and debilitating on-deck labor. More than a mere profession, crab fishing in these chilling waters stands as a brutal testament to the battle of man against nature, where every decision carries the weight of life and death. Alongside personal stories, Walker brings to light the stories of survivors from the industry's deadly disasters, painting a vivid picture of the harsh reality of this dangerous line of work. Walker rivetingly depicts the modern-day gold rush that drew hundreds of fortune-and adventure-hunters to Alaska's dangerous waters.

  • Working on the Edge by Spike Walker - book review

If you love the show "Deadliest Catch", you will really enjoy this book. I saw the author on one of the "After the Catch" shows & that's how I found the books. I also purchased, read & enjoyed "Nights of Ice" by Spike Walker. And I plan to buy Spike's 3rd. similar genre book soon. Just a little something to help hold you over until next crab season...

  • WORKING ON THE EDGE . AMAZING A 15 YEAR OLD BOOK POPUL

AWESOME BOOK ON CRABBING ! IT WAS TRUE IN DEPTH ACCOUNTS OF FISHING CRAB ON THE BEARING SEA! ITS FUNNY IT TOOK A TV SHOW TO MAKE AN OVER 15 YEAR OLD BOOK FAMOUS ! THERE IS ALSO TWO FOLLOW UP BOOKS SPIKE WALKER ! GREAT DESCRIPTIVE AUTHOR ! ENJOYED TILL THE LAST PAGE AND WANTED MORE !

  • Great book, a must read for Deadliest Catch Fans

This book is a recount of the dangers and rewards of fishing in both the Gulf of Alaska and the Bearing Sea. Spike Walker describes his 8 years of fishing for crab, as well he touches on some of the cod and other fish caught in these cold waters. Walker talks about both the highs (the ability to earn $100,000 in four months, in the early 80's) and the lows (stories of death, missing fishermen, and rampant drug usage). I really enjoyed this book. For those who love the Discovery Channels "World's Most Deadliest Catch" this book is a must. You will even recognize the name of some of the ships that came by accidents.

  • Working on the Edge by Spike Walker

I love reading about the fishermen in Alaska and what they go through on each outing. Spike Walker has been there and lived thru it so he has a truthful rendition of how hard the job is, as well as recapping all the drama in such a way that you feel like your right there along side them. I get so into the stories my heart skips a beat with every new adventure I read about.
