Vine Customer Review of Free Product An interesting, eclectic collection of essays that covers a lot of ground in the dynamic and multi-faceted world of British counterculture. This an area of society we as a nation have, it has to be said, excelled at not just recently but throughout history and although a little muted these days, it's still a thriving and innovative part of the political and cultural makeup of the UK and in many areas of it, we still lead the world. This is an erudite, lively and thought-provoking analysis of the current dimensions and content of that counter-culture. It's essay format makes the narrative a bit uneven which, with different voices, is inevitable but on the whole it is a coherent, lively and continually fascinating book. Each essay tackles a different cultural aspect and so it is possible to dip in and pick n' mix your reading, but an old-fashioned read from cover-to-cover gives you an excellent, holistic feel for where we presently are in the UK with regard to our cultural 'underground.' ****, Susan Murray's insightful overview of the alternative comedy scene is both informative and illuminating, shining a bright light on one of the UK s most important cultural movements in the late 20th Century., I'm still working through most of the book but have read chapter 4, Dance: Anarchy from the margins and free expression and wanted to write a review of that chapter. I found it really easy to read and loved the links made to the developments within the music world as well. It was great to be reminded of the close relationship between the developments of music and the dance styles that naturally coupled with them. Such quotes as "music and dance combined offered a critique against mainstream beliefs and values" really sum this up for me. Again, the author stating such things as "music has always been a marker of identity for the countercultures" shows the strong link between music, and other art forms such as dance, and how they can challenge existing cultures within society. I found it interesting when the author questioned the idea of whether "counter culture" declines when it becomes the "culture" and is therefore no longer pushing against anything. I also enjoyed the way the author reminded the reader that the new technology of today's world really helps give space for people to explore their interests/fantasies and share them with others. I wonder where that will take us in the future? ****, Informative and entertaining, this provides a whipsmart and affectionate analysis of a subculture that stands at a critical point., Oughton delivers a thorough contemporary investigation into the cult movie-going scene... with the passion and knowledge of a genuine insider...
