About this product

Product Information

These hymns were written by John Newton in Olney, England and were originally published in 1779. This collection includes John Newton's contribution of 281 hymns. Some favorite hymns by John Newton are "Amazing Grace," "Glorious Things of Thee are Spoken," and "How Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds." Oliver in 1779. Scripture references are full text.

  • Olney Hymnal...great resource

Wonderful lyrics. This hymnal has hymns that deal with many scripture portions from the Bible from the beginning to the end...plus different Biblical subjects. It is very well-thought out doctrinally, creative, and inspiring, which is not a surprise. The composer of many of them (or collector) was the man that composed "Amazing Grace". These can probably be put to tunes found in many hymn books by finding out the metre. The metre can be found by counting the number of syllables for each line and how many lines make up a verse. Older songs and hymns have standard metres that can be matched up to tunes with the same metres. I haven't had a chance to do that yet with this hymn book, but hope to be able to do so soon and to start introducing some of these to my church to use in worship ...
