Blackenstein is Wackenstein!
I am a major league Frankenstein fan, & I love anything to do with the big bolt-brained bumbler, but even I have to grudgingly agree at least in part with all the negative reviews out there on this one. I mean, it is definitely no "Blacula"! This seventies drive-in era flick was an incredibly low budget affair (so is the DVD which was obviously made off of an old VHS tape...you can even see where the video was damaged!), & the acting is pretty bad, especially from the guy playing the title role. Talk about no personality...it's like there is a big (& I mean BIG) blank space where he is whenever he is on the screen. And slow-moving? Lon Chaney Jr. as the Mummy moves faster than this hulking nonentity! And then there is the famous square afro...in the film a ... And then there is the famous square afro...in the film a limbless black Vietnam vet is given a faulty DNA formula (which has previously caused another patient to develop tiger stripes on one leg!) by the jealous assistant of the Nobel Prize-winning white scientist treating him, & at first he develops hairy hands & Neanderthal brow ridges which I admit is actually kind of cool. But then all of sudden he looks exactly, & I mean EXACTLY like an African-American version of the Universal movie monster right down to the suit & big clumpy boots he's wearing for no other reason than the movie is called "Blackenstein" (subtitled on the DVD print "The Black Frankenstein" just so you can grasp the obvious). He then sneaks out into the night like some low rent zombie (except zombies have more personality...) grunting & growling while his heart beats to beat the band on the soundtrack in search of victims, tearing the intestines out of any woman he comes across (black, white, it doesn't matter to him...they're all the same colour on the inside!). And as for the ending, I really hope that in real life the Los Angeles County Police Department has not trained their canine unit to do THAT! (Although from some of the stories I've heard over the years...) Does this film have anything going for it? Well yes, there is a lot of cool music lifted straight out of the old horror movies it is trying so badly to imitate, & for all it's talk about DNA & laser limb grafts, Dr. Stein's basement lab does have all of Kenneth Strickfaden's humming & zapping electrical equipment from the original "Frankenstein" brought out of storage one last time which is always a welcome sight. And there is also a fair bit of natural non-surgically-altered nudity on display for those out there that appreciate that kind of thing. Other than that though, unless you're a Frankie fanatic like me or just really love bad movies (like me!), the best thing about the DVD is the coming attractions section which includes a wonderfully wacky trailer for the cult classic "The Human Tornado".
