    Although written twenty-five years ago, Gardner’s exploration of what might loosely be called the domain of the liberal artist is as significant and timely today as it was when he wrote it. The book opens with the tale of Thor, beating back the darkness, which year by year grows ever bigger and the world of men and gods smaller. Woden, the god of wisdom, goes out and trapping the king of the trolls, asks “how order might triumph over chaos.” “‘Give me your left eye,’ said the king of the trolls, ‘and I’ll tell you.’” “Without hesitation, Woden gave up his left eye. ‘No tell me.’” “The troll said, ‘The secret is, Watch with both eyes!’” “. . .
