Is it good or bad art and why it matters
Although written twenty-five years ago, Gardner’s exploration of what might loosely be called the domain of the liberal artist is as significant and timely today as it was when he wrote it. The book opens with the tale of Thor, beating back the darkness, which year by year grows ever bigger and the world of men and gods smaller. Woden, the god of wisdom, goes out and trapping the king of the trolls, asks “how order might triumph over chaos.” “‘Give me your left eye,’ said the king of the trolls, ‘and I’ll tell you.’” “Without hesitation, Woden gave up his left eye. ‘No tell me.’” “The troll said, ‘The secret is, Watch with both eyes!’” “. . . All we have left is Thor’s hammer, which represent not brute force but art, or, counting hammerheads, art and criticism. Thor is no help. Like ... We have only his weapon, abandoned beside a fencepost in high weeds, if we can figure out how to use it.” He sets out his analysis of what has gone wrong in the arts and his instructions for beating back the darkness. Gardner spends the first part of the book discussing art and morality in general terms. Although he writes most about literature, any of the arts fit in. As for morality, it is about the truth of art—not of church and dogma, not of the left or right. It is about the reader or viewer who must say “enough.” The second half of the book is difficult. Here god sometimes makes an entrance, and one’s temptation is to quit reading. But Gardner is not preaching, and getting past these moments—when I think that although he has made as good a proposal for what is the place of art and criticism and moral truth in his soul aches and these are his screams at the darkness—is well worth it. This is the writing of one of America’s best writers. He brings to his exposition the gifts of the storyteller, art and truth, charm and magic. “On Moral Fiction,” is worth reading, not once, but often, as one might read and reread “A Christmas Carol.” It is a beacon in the chaos.
