About this product

Product Information

Although Polish by birth, Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) is regarded as one of the greatest writers in English, and Heart of Darkness, first published in 1902, is considered by many his "most famous, finest, and most enigmatic story." -- Encyclopaedia Britannica . The tale concerns the journey of the narrator (Marlow) up the Congo River on behalf of a Belgian trading company. Far upriver, he encounters the mysterious Kurtz, an ivory trader who exercises an almost godlike sway over the inhabitants of the region. Both repelled and fascinated by the man, Marlow is brought face to face with the corruption and despair that Conrad saw at the heart of human existence. In its combination of narrative and symbolic power, masterly character study and acute psychological penetration, Heart of Darkness ranks as a landmark of modern fiction. It is a book no serious student of literature can afford to miss.

  • Heart of Darkness

It was in great condition. I bought it because Jack said the phrase of "Heart of Darkness" on LOST, season 1 episode 4, entitled "Walkabout," and I read everything even remotely LOST-related. This is the episode where we find out that John Locke was in a wheelchair prior to the crash of Oceanic 815. He decides to go on a boar hunt with Kate Austen and Michael Dawson. When Kate tells Jack that she is going on the hunt, Jack says, "How come every time there's a trek into the heart of darkness, you sign up?" So that is why I bought the book.

  • Dissatisfied customer!!!!!!!!

I ordered this book, "The Heart of Darkness" by Joseph Conrad on July 24, 2007. It is now September 1, 2007 and I have yet to see the book, so I don't know what like or don't like about the book. I ordered it for my daughter to use with her AP (Advanced Placement) English class that started August 9, 2007. I will have to put a rating of poor on it as I have nothing to go by to have any other opinion.

  • Great value for money!

Heart of Darkness is a great book that I was required to read in English Class. It's small amount of pages is quite misleading. In the book are a variety of symbols, allusions, and themes that portray the underlying evil of humanity through the Charles Marlow's story of European conquest of the Congo for ivory.
