About this product

Product Information

The Age of Enlightenment of the 18th century, also called the Age of Reason, was so named for an intellectual movement that shook the foundations of Western civilization. In championing radical ideas such as individual liberty and an empirical appraisal of the universe through rational inquiry and natural experience, Enlightenment philosophers in Europe and America planted the seeds for modern liberalism, cultural humanism, science and technology, and laissez-faire Capitalism This volume brings together works from this era, with more than 100 selections from a range of sources. It includes examples by Kant, Diderot, Voltaire, Newton, Rousseau, Locke, Franklin, Jefferson, Madison, and Paine that demonstrate the pervasive impact of Enlightenment views on philosophy and epistemology as well as on political, social, and economic institutions.

  • A great introduction to the Enlightenment

This book is an excellent collection of primary sources on the Enlightenment. It is perfect to get an overview of the Enlightenment and to get a taste of the writing of some of the philosophes. A great starting point to decide which aspects/philosophes interest you most. It contains a lot of excerpts from longer classic Enlightenment texts (such as Smith's Wealth of Nations) as well as a variety of letters. A great starting point to understanding one of the most important movements in history.

  • Be Enlightened

Pay no mind to schoolchildren who dislike reading assignments and trash books in retribution. This is an excellent overview of Enlightenment philosophy, giving a wonderful representation of philosophical thought of that era in a compact, very usable form. This book can serve as a mini-education on the Enlightenment period for the general reader, or serve as springboard for more intensive study by those who wish to know more.

  • Wow...

This book has anything and everything that is important in terms of enlightenment literature. I am not pleased with the fact that there are no footnotes or analysis segments included to make things easier to understand. Some of the works are very difficult.

  • The Portable Enlightenment Reader

This book was one of the worst books I have ever read. We were forced to read it for a class, which was the only reason I even touched this book.
