A Humorous Parody of Life in the Military
I wasn't sure if this film would be enjoyable, but it turned out being not only entertaining but also quite funny in parts. A new recruit (Dick Shawn) is drafted to join the Air Force (much to his surprise and consternation since he had already served in the military, had been shot down during an aerial battle, and then had been declared dead) and then gets shipped to a remote Pacific Island that seems to have no bearing to any military purpose. The natives hate the military presence (they say it is scaring the fish away) and even the Pentagon seems to have forgotten the place exists. But the commanding officer (Ernie Kovaks) and his adjutant (Jack Warden) manage to find a way with the new recruit's help to bring tourists to the island (mostly troops on R&R from other Pacific locations) ... I wasn't sure if this film would be enjoyable, but it turned out being not only entertaining but also quite funny in parts. Of course, the WAY they do it (by utilizing cast-off military surplus) gets the notice of the Pentagon that, naturally, sends a team to investigate. The ensuing shell game that actually involves the eager participation of the locals is a delight to behold. The ending will have you cheering--and, of course, everything works out just fine! (P.S. Don Knotts makes a few cameo appearances, too.)

Although not a classic comedy. It's a good show from yesteryear. It's worth the time to watch a war comedy of a different kind. Give it a look see. You won't be disappointed.
