I could not put it down in the 90's and its doing it to me again!
I read this book when it first came out many years ago. Liked it so much that I read almost all of Tom Clancy's novels and watched all of the movies made from the books. Was always hoping a Without Remorse movie would be made about John Kelly/John Clark but it did not happen for almost 30 years. And finally it did in 2021, but it does not follow the original book story line. I enjoyed it but it made me want to go back and reread the original and I am loving every page again! I may go back and reread Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger, Hunt for Red October, Sum of All Fears, Cardinal of the Kremlin, etc., etc., etc.I read this book when it first came out many years ago. pages 13/16 describe large, un-supercharged Detroit Diesels in the Pacemaker Coho 41.... to begin with, darn near every Pacemaker Coho 41 was powered by 454ci. gasoline engines, which require a completely different fuel & delivery system. all manufactured Detroit Diesel engines small & large enough to fit a Pacemaker Coho were 2 stroke engines which require a supercharger to function. that error with still 735 pages left to read took courage on my part. really no excuse for a sportsman like Mr. Clancy to make an error of this type. This book is intense. I'm a huge fan of Tom Clancy. He tends to invent characters that reappear in later books. The most notable of which is Jack Ryan. He begins as an analyst for a gov't. agency and ends up as President of the United States. Occasionally mentioned in some later Clancy novels is Mr. Clark. Until this book, we knew very little about him. He was always dark and mysterious. Well, in this book we find out how Mr. Clark came to be. And holy cow, what a rush! He began life as John Kelly, grew up, joined the Marines and became a Recon sniper. After a couple of tours of Vietnam, he comes home and gets settled in. He's driving one day and sees a girl hitchhiking. He picks her up and learns her tragic story. She's a prostitute and an addict who was abused by local drug ... This book is intense. What follows is extrememly intense and violent. The dealers have no idea what they're up against. If you visualize what you're reading, it's almost enough to make you gasp. It's awesome, I loved this book! As is Clancy's style, characters you'll recognize tie in to the story. Kelly is on the police's radar because of his near death first encounter with the dealers. The detective who investigates the killings is none other than Det. Ryan....Jack Ryan's father. Even Jack gets a few lines in this one as a college student who's come home on break. If you've ever been curious about the origins of Mr Clark, this is his story. And what a great story it is.

This is one of Tom Clancy's better books in the Jack Ryan series, especially so because it covers how John Kelly mixed with the CIA. The book may not not have Jack Ryan in it, and it is based during Vietnam but John Kelly or Mr. Clark is one interesting and efficient fellow. All in all, Kelly does his job well enough and Tom Clancy makes this book interesting enough to make it one his best works so far in my opinion.This is one of Tom Clancy's better books in the Jack Ryan series, especially so because it covers how John Kelly mixed with the CIA.
