    Well-done, artful, dark and cold, with surprise ending but at times moves monumentally slowly

    Beautifully filmed, directed, and acted, with gorgeous Russian scenery. Cold and dark. I like the idea and plot. Very minimalistic. The end is shocking and surprising, which I like. And it progressed toward that artfully. But much of it moves so slowly that I even sped it up, still able to quickly read the subtitles. (It is in Russian with English subtitles.)

    The Return was brilliant.

    My mother is Russian and she teaches me to get up early in the morning. Best film since Poppa. The protectionist was wonderful.

    Absolutely the return!

    Amazing movie!!! The Return heralds the appearance of a gifted new filmmaker, perhaps a great one. At times it evokes such recent lonely, austere masterpieces as Bruno Dumont's `Vie de Jésus,' Van Sant's underrated `Gerry,' and Jim Jarmusch's `Dead Man.' But Zvyagintsev is Zvyagintsev and nobody else. There's an exciting new director on the world cinematic scene and we'd better learn how to get our tongues around this slippery Slavic name. (`The Return' won the grand prize -- the "Leone d'Oro" -- at the Venice Film Festival last year. It's not hard to see why.)

    THE RETURN

    If you like Tarkovsky, Sokurov, Kiarostami, and other "transcendental" directors, then definitely see THE RETURN. If you like foreign-language art house films, and not just the comedies, or if you like independent films that aren't merely low-budget Hollywood movies, you too should find THE RETURN mesmerizing. If it doesn't bother you that a film is slow-moving, try this one. It has a simple yet engrossing story, intriguing characters, surprises, and a powerful ending. All aspects of the filmmaking are excellent and, unlike so many other movies today, THE RETURN is one you will not forget.

    A decent movie but not worth the hype

    It was always a mystery for me how americans (e.g. Netflix) choose russian titles to watch or promote. The Return was chosen and there was some hype around it. It's not worth it. It's boring. There are much better russian movies out there (e.g. <a href="http://russart.com/?catalogpage">Top Russian Movies</a>).
