About this product

Product Information

The New York Times bestselling prequel to the Pulitzer Prize-winning classic The Killer Angels In this brilliantly written epic novel, Jeff Shaara traces the lives, passions, and careers of the great military leaders from the first gathering clouds of the Civil War. Here is Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, a hopelessly by-the-book military instructor and devout Christian who becomes the greatest commander of the Civil War; Winfield Scott Hancock, a captain of quartermasters who quickly establishes himself as one of the finest leaders of the Union army; Joshua Chamberlain, who gives up his promising academic career and goes on to become one of the most heroic soldiers in American history; and Robert E. Lee, never believing until too late that a civil war would ever truly come to pass. Profound in its insights into the minds and hearts of those who fought in the war, Gods and Generals creates a vivid portrait of the soldiers, the battlefields, and the tumultuous times that forever shaped the nation.

  • It was like I was watching it happen.

This was my first Civil war book and I was not disapointed at all. This is the first in a series of 3 books on that chronicle the Civil war, so make sure you read all 3, it's worth it. This book really painted a great mental picture of who the characters were and what they were feeling. Their different views on the state of our country before the war began was great to read. The author really made their personalities come alive. The descriptions of the battles made it seem almost real and there are also some good maps to help visualize the troop movements. I've read many a war novel and this has to be one of my favorites so far. I highly recommend this book.

  • Gods and Generals

I have not been able to finish reading this novel yet, but what I have read to date has gotten me into a furvor to complete it ASAP. I purchased this novel mainly because I am a civil war buff. After reading numerous other literature on the subject and speaking with other enthusists, "Gods and Generals", written by Jeff Shaara and "The Killer Angels", written by his father Mike in 1974 constantly came up as definite books to read on the subject. So as you now see, bidding for this book was a must. Other titles I will be looking for in the near future include Mike Shaara's book mentioned previously and "The Last Full measure", also written by Jeff.

  • Gods and Generals--

Usually I find Civil War novels boring; but I loved this one. This was the first time I had really heard about Lee's blunders at Gettysburg. To me, Longstreet and Chamberlain were the heroes. I wouldn't deify them any more than I would Lee or Grant, but watching them and hearing their voices, such as they could be represented, was very enjoyable. Americans have been taught very little about the civil war. How could I go to Gettysburg not once but twice and never learn about the South's strategic mistakes? Was everyone hiding the truth? Or were they dancing around it. Or didn't they care? Highly recommended, especially if you know something of the civil war.

  • Good Beach Read

I started reading this book at the beach and liked it very much. I didn't finish it while at the beach, so I looked for a used copy on the internet. If you like (Un)Civil War history, you'll like this book. It gives insights into the lives of Civil War generals on both sides just prior to the war starting. It continues during the early part of the war up till the Battle of Gettysburg. I still haven't finished the book due to other obiligations. Do not buy the movie of the same title. It is truly awful. Ted Turner directed it, and it is one of the truly awful movies I've tried to watch.

  • Excellent Book
