Finally on DVD!!!!!!
A true cult classic now on DVD! This film plays on the PMRC-era irrational fear of explicit rock lyrics poisoning the fragile minded youth complete with ignorant prudish parents and the rebellious easily influenced high school teens. The only nuance is that the famous band "Black Roses" decide to start their world tour in tiny Mill Basin's high school auditorium!! They do have alterior motives though...turn into Gwar-like monsters then possess the kids of Mill Basin and beyond with their sinister heavy metal concerts! Mission accomplished, kind of..despite teacher Mr Moorhouse's (John Martin) attempts to save the day with his strange ramblings about American Literature! By the way...in some of the classroom scenes what gives with the bird chirping too loudly at ... A true cult classic now on DVD! How can you deny the humor in the Soprano's very own "Big P*$$y" Vincent Pastore in his first movie role as angry dad Mr Ames getting eaten by an evil monster living in his son's Cerwin-Vega speaker? All he wanted to do was read the evening paper! Believe it or not, things get even weirder. What's the best way to kill topless Julie-turned-catmonster? Beat her with a tennis racket then shove a tennis ball in her mouth of course! Being a heavy metal fan myself, I enjoyed Black Roses "playing" (ok, lip-syncing) the Lizzy Borden classic -Me Against The World- as the rallying cry for the band-turned-demons! You'll also see drumming legend Carmine Appice...I mean..."Vinny Apache" deliver a couple of lines!! The movie soundtrack CD featuring Lizzy Borden, Bang Tango, Hallow's Eve, and King Kobra (Carmine Appice's band at the time) is highly sought after and goes for BIG bucks IF you can find it. So is this a good movie? Depends on your definition of good. Don't go in expecting Halloween. Keep in mind it's very cliched and campy...think KISS Meets the Phantom of The Park. Not nearly as polished as say Trick Or Treat but still hilarious! The DVD gives us the added special features: a commentary track with director John Fasano & Carla Ferrigno, a lengthy original theatrical promotional trailer, an original Cannes Film Festival promo, and audition videotape excerpts for the part of Damian including the audition of Sal Viviano!! All in all, not for serious horror fans but a must for B-movie and heavy metal aficionados!

Its a rock and roll "B" movie from the 80's. Don't expect too much, and you won't be disappointed. You either love it or you hate it. The special effects are so-so compared to today's, but it was the 80's. Typical slasher movie storyline and it falls right into "that satanic heavy metal will make all the kids evil" mindset. Its keeps up 80's metal appearances, its like watching a long Dokken video. If you liked "Trick or Treat" with Gene Simmons and Skippy from Family Ties you'll probably like this too (I do). Although its a bit lower budget then "Trick or Treat", it still deserves its place among cult horror classics.Its a rock and roll "B" movie from the 80's. Demonic band memebers, fiery battles between man and ultimate evil, so if you want to take a ride on the wild side black roses is the movie for you.. because they only live for one night and thats all they'll ever need.
