Play any disk and from external hard drive? Yep!
It really plays anything as it will also upscale an older 460i movie and play it as 1080i. Not only that but I can plug my large external hard drive into the USB and pull up my movie selection and watch any number of the movies from this drive. I only wish it had a wi-fi lan built into it so I could update my hard drive from my PC without moving the portable drive but not a real big issue. It's a nice media device but a firmware to help organize the hard drive would be a nice touch and still not too late to provide a download for each storage disk working with the desktop software to create a nice movie/media catalog. If other non media files are on the hard drive it takes a long time to find the movie files. To correct this, I keep the drive clean by only putting movies on it and organize ... A Perfect Solution
The best thing about this DVD player is that it has the USB port. I am able to plug my external hard drive (2.5") in and play video files, music files, and picture files from there. It is pretty much convenient when you have movie files on your computer and you don't want to burn it on DVDs. It saves you money from buying new DVDs to burn your movies. I rated good because the speed of starting the movie files and reading picture files is average. To start up a movie file, it takes some 10 seconds or so. Flipping through pictures takes a few seconds for it to load. My final thought is that I do not regret buying this item because it does the job of playing my movie files from my external hard drive for a very good price.The best thing about this DVD player is that it has the USB port. Philips DVP5992/37 DVD Player
It has all the connections that I wanted. The remote is easy to use. It is very thin and a little wide. The display has to be read from pretty much straight on, but works great. The programing and picture are great. I would recommend this player to a friend.

Terrific DVD/DIVX player. GREAT GREAT VALUE
I freaking love this player! Over the last year, I've purchased and convinced friends and family to purchase almost a dozen of these divx/dvd players. The kewlest thing about this unit is that you can play DIVX files (compressed videos) which can be downloaded from torrent sites. My wife and I virtually don't watch TV anymore - I download a whole season of whatever we want to see (like criminal minds) and then I copy episodes to a flash drive or portable hard drive and we watch them on either big screen (I bought 2 of these units for myself... one for the living room and the other for the bedroom). And if we want to see something that just showed tonight, within 30 minutes, it will be uploaded to a torrent website for download. This just simplifies our lives. Rather than spending tons ... I freaking love this player! Over the last year, I've purchased and convinced friends and family to purchase almost a dozen of these divx/dvd players.
