About this product

Product Information

From the Master of Horror comes the first gripping book in the twelve book New York Times bestselling Saga of Darren Shan. Start the tale from the beginning in the book that inspired the feature film The Vampire's Assistant and petrified devoted fans worldwide. A young boy named Darren Shan and his best friend, Steve, get tickets to the Cirque Du Freak, a wonderfully gothic freak show featuring weird, frightening half human/half animals who interact terrifyingly with the audience. In the midst of the excitement, true terror raises its head when Steve recognizes that one of the performers-- Mr. Crepsley-- is a vampire! Stever remains after the show finishes to confront the vampire-- but his motives are surprising! In the shadows of a crumbling theater, a horrified Darren eavesdrops on his friend and the vampire, and is witness to a monstrous, disturbing plea. As if by destiny, Darren is pulled to Mr. Crepsley and what follows is his horrifying descent into the dark and bloody world of vampires. This is the beginning of Darren's story.

  • Stunningly fun and grisly book!

I loved this book, the chapters are short and motivate you to keep reading. The story line is fun yet gruesome at the same time and leaves you waiting for the next book. I love how this is a "coming of immortality" book about friendship, hardship, family and learning valuable lessons such as not to steal or lie. This was fun and biting and perfect for children of many ages. It is not outright gruesome but more playfully so without being too graphic. The fact that the story centers around two boys makes it easily understanding and easy to relate to for the young and mature as well. As soon as I finished this one I immediately went to my computer to order the next.

  • A Rainy Day Viewing of the Movie Turned Me Onto a Great Book Series!

I read the book because I saw the film on a rainy Saturday aftrernoon on the SyFy channel. Wow. Reminds me of the "Flash Gordon" serials I watched but much, much darker. I understand that this is geared towards "tweens". Publishers understand that the imagination of "tweens" is not all light and happily-ever-afer. I read up to volume 6. Now I need to find an eBay seller for volumes 7 through 12....and I read that there is another series based on the the pre-vampire life of the main Cirque du Freak vampire. eBay, here I come!

  • worth reading

I decided to buy this book because I saw the preview for the movie and thought I would read the book first. The book was great, I thought it was just scary enough for the age group it targets. well written, gives great descriptions. I look forward to seeing the movie. The ending keeps you wanting to read the next book.
