Reviews
"An enthralling novel. . . . Mahfouz has plunged into the ancient book of fantasy and found a modern truth." -- Chicago Tribune "Its colorful portrayal of human conflict and folly . . . generously displays the narrative skills that make Mahfouz one of the best of all modern storytellers. Few writers display such masterly comprehension of the interconnectedness of character and fate. This novel soars." -- Philadelphia Inquirer " Arabian Nights and Days is among Mr. Mahfouz's best works. . . . An eloquent ratification of his Nobel Prize." -- Dallas Morning News "Mahfouz weaves an entertaining arabesque of intrigue, betrayal, obsessive love, social injustice, reincarnations and wrongs righted or made worse." -- Publishers Weekly, Praise for Naguib Mahfouz: "The greatest writer in one of the most widely understood languages in the world, a storyteller of the first order in any idiom." -- Vanity Fair "A Dickens of the Cairo cafes." -- Newsweek "The incredible variety of Naguib Mahfouz's writings continue to dazzle our eyes." -- The Washington Post "Naguib Mahfouz virtually invented the novel as an Arab form. He excels at fusing deep emotion and soap opera." -- The New York Times Book Review "Mahfouz's work is freshly nuanced and hauntingly lyrical. The Nobel Prize acknowledges the universal significance of his fiction." -- Los Angeles Times Book Review

  • Not bad, could have been alot clearer

Arabian Nights and Days is a translated work. It captures the spirit of Arabic culture, while it appeals to the Western audience. However, during his dialogues, Mahfouz, the author, sometimes neglects to mention who was speaking. So you have this long dialogue between two or three people and the reader doesn't know who's talking. It was a pain to keep track of all the characters and there's more than 30 characters to keep track of. Overall, not a bad story, but you may have to read the book more than once to get a grip of what just happened.

  • I bought a copy for a gift after reading a copy from the public library. I've read several of the author's works finding them most enjoyable.
