A travel in colonial Cuba
I was born in Cuba and emigrated when I was 17 years old. This book transported me to an earlier time in the island’s history, late 1800’s, and allowed me to learn how people lived and travelled then, what were the customs that survived the passing of years and identify places worth visiting then and today. The book’s style is that of a travel guide for foreigners. The author is American, a soldier from the recently-ended Civil War, who seeks a warm climate to in the hope of improving his health. There are several chapters dealing with the main Cuban export products (sugar, tobacco, coffee), highlighting how the crops were processed into finished products. Best reprinting of a classic traveler book about old Cuba
Great but only for history of mid 19th century everyday Cuba for interested souls. There are several reprints of this classic work but this is the best. I first bought a more recent, hard bound, reprint but returned it because of small photo-printed pages difficult to read
