After having served a brief prison sentence for manslaughter, Joad arrives at his family's Oklahoma farm only to find it abandoned. Muley (John Qualen), a neighbor now nearly mad with grief, tells Tom of the drought that has transformed the farmland of Oklahoma into a desert and of the preying land agents who have plowed under the shacks of the sharecroppers. Joined by former hellfire preacher Casy (John Carradine), Tom finds his extended family, including Pa (Charles Grapewin) and his indomitable Ma (Jane Darwell), packing their ramshackle truck to seek work in the fields of California. As the family treks across the country, their dissolution begins with the deaths of Tom's grandparents at close intervals. When they arrive in California, the Joads find only an abundance of poverty-stricken migrants like themselves and little in the way of potential work. Yet, ever resilient, they maintain their dignity, hoping for the best. Among the talented cast, Fonda does perhaps the best work of his career, as does Qualen in the film's most haunting sequence. Director of photography Gregg Toland captures the suffering and the weathered, luminous nobility of the Joads and the other uprooted, drifting families, creating striking images equal to the best work of Dorothea Lange and Walker Evans. In a stirring film that stands as a microcosm of the depression experience of millions, Ford gives poverty a human face in a way that was rare then and even rarer in the decades to follow as Hollywood films with a sense of class consciousness dwindled like a species nearing extinction.

It is a film that depicts the era of the depression. John Ford did an excellent direction of this movie. Plenty of background what people had to go through to search for a better life.

The Grapes of Wrath DVD
My high school American Literature class read the book this semester and I purchased the DVD to enrich their reading experience. I love the DVD; it allowed us to talk about director John Ford's choice of leaving out of the film certain scenes from the book. The great historical perspective the DVD offers about the drought years and also about the filming process my students found intriguing. I would highly recommend this DVD for a similar class or for any movie buff who wants to see a great movie filmed by a master director. It's a slice of film history at its finest and a look at how America responded (or didn't)to those who lost everything except faith and the will to persevere. The Grapes of Wrath (2004, DVD)
A real must have classic movie about the dust bowl days of no work and farmers losing their land,being run off after living there a hundred yrs. No work and traveling to the land of milk and honey...Calif with promise of plenty of work, when in reality there was not so much work and the wages paid was just afew cents a day, not even eough to feed the family....it's about the hardships in those days,the endurance, the injustice.....the love. It's truely a wonderful movie. One of Henry Fonda's first movies....lots of star actors. A real portrayal of what life was like way back when.A real must have classic movie about the dust bowl days of no work and farmers losing their land,being run off after living there a hundred yrs. Funny, but although my wife says that this is a staple of high school English classes across the country, I don't ever recall reading the book or seeing the movie in class. I bought this DVD for some background entertainment concerning old US Route 66, prior to a trip I've been planning along the remaining sections for some time. I would rate this as a must see to learn how rough it was on people from the farming states in the Midwest during the dust bowl years. How they risked everything to try and overcome desolation and despair, only to find more where the grass was supposed to be greener. Through the entire movie, the Joad family continued to show a gritty triumph of the human spirit regardless the pitfall before them. As far as the product was concerned, the DVD ... Funny, but although my wife says that this is a staple of high school English classes across the country, I don't ever recall reading the book or seeing the movie in class. I bought this DVD for some background entertainment concerning old US Route 66, prior to a trip I've been planning along the remaining sections for some time. everyone should watch this movie so they can see what life was like during the Great Depression.. They will no longer have so many things to complain about as they do now.. Life is easy compared to back then.
