    Best Bread Book

I've been waiting to make bread for years. Now that I can I order Silverton's bread book. She and James Beard were the definitive works at the time of their creation. Silverton's creative bread approach is amazing. No commercial yeast? Fine, you can make a great starter with grapes. Takes a while but the product is unsurpassed. No offence to Mr. Beard, of course. Great book and worth the wait. Silverton's career produced great recipes, too. I've been using her Silver Palate cookbook for decades. Every recipe is excellent and still works today.

  • At the top

This is an extremely in-depth detailed book of breadmaking by an expert, professional, and perfectionist. You probably should be at that level of interest or an experienced bread baker who wants to bring their skill to the next level to truly appreciate what the author brings to us. For example, her explicit instruction of how to make the best sourdough starter imaginable takes 14 days including feeding it 3 times a day. I know of other sourdough starter recipes that take five days with little attention. This is not to say they would be of the same quality, but most of us have a daytime job. Nonetheless, this is a wonderful book that makes very interesting reading and it is a pleasure to enjoy Nancy's dedication, enthusiasm, and love of breadmaking vicariously until I can find the time.

  • Perfect description. I love la Brea bread so I hoped for great recipes

If you like to bake, you'll enjoy reading this book. If you don't even like to fix food with a recipe, it's not the book for you. I like to bake all kinds of recipes so I really enjoyed reading the different recipes and how they are made. They are more time consuming but worth every minute, if you like to bake.

  • Excellent book

This is a really well written book with clear information on how she does things, how you can do things, and what changes to make to the recipes based on your kitchen.
