Notes
John Prine returns to the world of studio recording with in Spite of Ourselves, his first new Oh Boy release in nearly five years. Teaming with Iris DeMent, Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris, Melba Montgomery, Patty Loveless, Trisha Yearwood, Dolores Keane and Connie Smith. Produced by longtime Prine collaborator Jim Rooney, "In Spite of Ourselves" juxtaposes Prine with three generations of traditional music's sweetest female voices and hearkens back to a time when cheating was as much a part of the lyrical equation as happily ever after.

The title " In Spite of Ourselves " is well written in a humorous tone by Mr. Prine and will make you smile or laugh out loud.

John Prine is an amazing talent. Each song in this CD is a duet with a female artist and the harmony is outstanding.

  • John and his Country Ladies

I'm not a John Prine fan. I like his songs others have recorded (Bonnie Raitt, Joan Baez and Bette Midler). This 1999 HDCD came as a surprise considering his post throat cancer trauma. His voice scrapes like chalk on slate and his entourage helps and aids him considerably. His decision to use the legendary Connie Smith and EmmyLou Harris was a wise one. The two duets between Smith and Prine are the best of the pickings. The remake of her 70's Every Brother's hit SO SAD TO WATCH GOOD LOVE GO BAD" is better suited to Connie's supple voice and steely range. Her ability to sing with, solo or sing around Prine is an asset to this cut and makes it work. Still, Connie's husky soprano and uncanny phrasing muffles Prine's vocals even when she holds back and ...

  • Decent, but less than expected.

The album has a couple of very good songs, but most of it is not up to Prine's high standard. Possibly he did not write the songs. I have all of his albums that he personally wrote. He is a really good writer, and I should know a little about writing, as I'm working on my 4th book of poetry. Larry
