"Groundbreaking . . . it's the best book on tennis that I have ever read, and its profound advice applies to many other parts of life. . . . The Inner Game of Tennis is just as relevant today as it was in 1974. Even as the outer game has changed, the inner game has remained the same. . . . A profound book about tennis and much more." --Bill Gates, GatesNotes ("Five of my All-Time Favorite Books"), "Groundbreaking . . . W. Timothy Gallwey discovers that performance is all about focus. Synopsis
The timeless guide to achieving the state of "relaxed concentration" that's not only the key to peak performance in tennis but the secret to success in life itself--now in a 50th anniversary edition with an updated epilogue, a foreword by Bill Gates, and an updated preface from NFL coach Pete Carroll "Groundbreaking . . . the best guide to getting out of your own way . . . Its profound advice applies to many other parts of life."--Bill Gates, GatesNotes ("Five of My All-Time Favorite Books") This phenomenally successful guide to mastering the game from the inside out has become a touchstone for hundreds of thousands of people. Billie Jean King has called the book her tennis bible; Al Gore has used it to focus his campaign staff; and Itzhak Perlman has recommended it to young violinists. Based on W. Timothy Gallwey's profound realization that the key to success doesn't lie in holding the racket just right, or positioning the feet perfectly, but rather in keeping the mind uncluttered, this transformative book gives you the tools to unlock the potential that you've possessed all along. "The Inner Game" is the one played within the mind of the player, against the hurdles of self-doubt, nervousness, and lapses in concentration. Gallwey shows us how to overcome these obstacles by trusting the intuitive wisdom of our bodies and achieving a state of "relaxed concentration." With chapters devoted to trusting the self and changing habits, it is no surprise then, that Gallwey's method has had an impact far beyond the confines of the tennis court. Whether you want to play music, write a novel, get ahead at work, or simply unwind after a stressful day, Gallwey shows you how to tap into your utmost potential. In this fiftieth-anniversary edition, the principles of the Inner Game shine through as more relevant today than ever before. No matter your goals, The Inner Game of Tennis gives you the definitive framework for long-term success., Master your game from the inside out With more than 800,000 copies sold since it was first published thirty years ago, this phenomenally successful guide has become a touchstone for hundreds of thousands of people. Not just for tennis players, or even just for athletes in general, this handbook works for anybody who wants to improve his or her performance in any activity, from playing music to getting ahead at work. W. Timothy Gallwey, a leading innovator in sports psychology, reveals how to - focus your mind to overcome nervousness, self-doubt, and distractions - find the state of "relaxed concentration" that allows you to play at your best - build skills by smart practice, then put it all together in match play Whether you're a beginner or a pro, Gallwey's engaging voice, clear examples, and illuminating anecdotes will give you the tools you need to succeed. "Introduced to The Inner Game of Tennis as a graduate student years ago, I recognized the obvious benefits of W. Timothy] Gallwey's teachings. . . . Whether we are preparing for an inter-squad scrimmage or the National Championship Game, these principles lie at the foundation of our program."--from the Foreword by Pete Carroll

The Inner Game of Tennis by W. Timothy G...

The Inner Game of Tennis by W. Timothy Gallwey has really helped me concentrate in all sports including volleyball and pickleball. While others become angry with themselves (even after a streak of great returns), I've come to enjoy both the on-target hits and the not-so-on-target hits. The game just feels good, and I'm amazed at the shots I make without thinking. Sometimes I also get into another mode where I feel alive and the game is thrilling. The inner game really is the first challenge!

      • Mental game, training, head space

I bought this book to help my mental game for rock climbing. I heard it recommended multiple times on a climbing podcast called “The Nugget”. And this book has been awesome! It speaks so many truths to the mental game that can be applied to anything (not just tennis).

      • Interesting & useful insights!

Tennis is probably best advanced by steady work on basic mechanics. But when it comes to the important thinking element, this book’s a fine guide.
