    For his adaptation of this classic Shakespeare tragedy, director Franco Zeffirelli (TAMING OF THE SHREW) made the inspired choice of casting teenaged actors in the leads (Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting), and their youthful innocence adds an extra dimension of beauty and tragedy to the story. Shot on location in Italy, the film benefits from an earthy sense of realism, a cast of excellent supporting actors, and a memorable soundtrack by Nino Rota. This saga of star-crossed lovers caught in their feuding family's crossfire had strong political resonance at the time of its release, and has lost little of its poignancy.

The music adds to the buildup of the scenes, the period costumes are opulent, and the cast of characters all support one another as the war between the Montagues & Capulets builds towards a climatic ending.

      Best "Romeo & Juliet" movie ever produced

      My title says it all. This is a classic, and has been used in classrooms across the country to study Shakespeare's timeless story. This version won an academy award for costume back in 1968. Plus the lead actors are gorgeous!!

      Beautiful Movie

      This is one of my favorite movies from my teens. I wondered if it would feel dated when I watched it again. The answer is no because it took place in the 1500's (I think). The acting is wonderful and the story is beautiful. Heartbreaking but beautiful.

      I have always loved this movie!! It came out when I was a SR. in high school--has always been a favorite--have the VHS--the DVD is hard to come by--why some movies are easy to find--and in print/on DVD--and others like this--not??? GREAT MOVIE!! GREAT VERSION OF PLAY!!

      The Classic Version

      Well acted by age appropriate actors and actresses. Plus Laurence Olivier voicing the chorus and Lord Montague (portrayed by an Italian actor), music by Nino Rota...all add up to the best or at least my favorite version of Romeo And Juliet!
