This desktop processor in the Yorkfield series of chips uses Intel’s Penryn CPU microarchitecture (45nm), features four cores, a 4MB L2 cache system, and other specifications built for speed that has your hardware dishing out solid performance. The Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400S CPU has four cores ready to power your desktop with upgraded technology. The quad-core model means that your system essentially runs as if there are four CPUs inside, allowing for parallel computing. Software applications then get more work done at the same time, which means your machine completes tasks sooner. The bus speed, which measures data transfer between computer components or between computers, is 1333 MHz FSB. (FSB, or front-side bus, carries information between the CPU and memory controller hub.) The 2.66 GHz processor in the Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400S is speedy enough to handle most software tasks. Overclocking is possible with this series of chips for advanced users, however, but may require an advanced motherboard or other hardware, including additional cooling. Those looking to use processors from the Intel Core 2 Quad series CPUs for gaming (when combined with a video card containing a dedicated GPU), find that the processor has enough clock speed to fuel solid graphics performance. The 2.66 GHz of the Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400S meets the minimum GHz specifications for many top games, and may be able to run some games with lower requirements on higher graphics settings. The 2.66 GHz is ample speed for most office software applications, such as word processing and spreadsheet-type content. The Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400S sports 4MB of L2 cache memory, which shares that amount of data between each core for quick access, cutting down processing times across your system for high performance. This processor supports type DDR2 RAM. The instruction set uses Intel 64 architecture, which improves performance by allowing systems to address more than 4GB of both virtual and physical memory. The socket, which provides the mechanical and electrical connections between the processor and motherboard, connects to type LGA775 motherboard sockets and the package size is 37.5mm by 37.5mm. The max thermal design power (TDP) of the Q9300 is 65W. The voltage range is 0.8500V-1.3625V. This CPU also features Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology, which balances high performance with the power-conservation needs of mobile systems by switching both voltage and frequency in tandem between high and low levels in response to processor load in the CPU.
