Originally a 1965 Jimmy Stewart vehicle, this FLIGHT gets a rough and ready updating for the new century, with the stalwart Dennis Quaid now inhabiting the title role. He's a pilot on a routine trip out to investigate some remote oil rigs in the Gobi Desert, but things go wrong and he makes a crash landing in the middle of nowhere. For him, and the men along for the ride, a slow, tortured, thirsty death seems certain, unless the plucky mechanic in the crew (Giovanni Ribisi) can design a whole new plane from the wreckage. As with the original, this is a manly adventure of rugged survival and mechanical ingenuity, only this time there's a woman on board, Kelly (Miranda Otto) who generates some romantic sparks. Some of the other survivors are played by: Tyrese Gibson, Sticky Fingaz, Bob Brown and Kirk Jones. The men and one woman have to tangle with murderous desert raiders and numerous sandstorms in addition to the frequent squabbling amongst themselves. Director John Moore gets a lot of mileage out of the desert backdrop and Ribisi is solid as the mechanic with a troubled past. It was produced by William Aldrich, whose dad Robert directed the Stewart original. Edward Burns (THE BROTHERS McMULLEN) co-wrote the new screenplay.

Decent remake of a Great Jimmy Stewart Film
If you have ever seen the original, you will be underwhelmed be this film. Don't get me wrong, this is a good film! Dennis Quaid, a fantastic actor, does a great job as the lead character, the pilot. Hugh Laurie, one of my favorites, and an extremely versatile actor, turns in a yeoman performance. The story is good, and sticks fairly close to the original, a true blessing! The problem is, one has to wonder why this film was necessary. In my mind, If your going to do a remake, you need to make it better, or at least, offer the viewer something to make it remembered above or beyond the original. A prime example would be "The Fly". Same basic premise as the original, but updated and fresh, so as not to draw direct comparison. Both were great movies, (though I'm still a fan of the original), ... Unlike "House on Haunted Hill" that kept the same premise, in a totally different story, like "The Fly", but the remake was a really bad story, and as such a really bad movie. "The flight of the Phoenix" was basically the same story, thus enjoyable, but how do you propose to out perform the cast of the original? James Stewart, Sir Richard Attenborogh, Peter Finch, Ernest Borgnine, and George Kennedy. So many stars, George Kennedy, a major star in his own right, barely got creditis, and was almost like an extra. Virtually the same story, Inferior cast compared to the original, and really, no great improvement in cinematography, or effects. Like most copies, they are never as good as the original. If you haven't seen either one, then you will find this an enjoyable film, and well worth watching, but I urge you to then see the original, ot to forgo this altogether, and just see the original. If you have seen the original, don't waste your time, re watch the original, and have a great night with a great movie KJWildman

the Phoenix rises again...
The tale, although updated.. stays true to the original movie. The Action, adventure, and contrasts are upgraded making this remake one worthy of viewing and remembering.

A journey into the unexpected
It had been a few years since I saw it but it was then and now a amazing journey into the film's characters and still keeps you at the edge of your seat. Awesome movie definitely!!!!

Good movie!
Once again, another movie I thought I'd hate. My uncle and his family were watching this, so I was just going ot watch it to. I ended up liking it and I think it's pretty good. Needed this for my collection. I know I'd never be able to last in their situation. Their plane crashes in the desert and everything goes horribly wrong (of course!). Do they survive?
