This is amazing. It's based in Russia and is about a serial killer who is a sexual sadist and seems to prefer children but get the rare young woman here and there. The Russian government is kinda a jerkface in this movie, but some surprises take place that does the movie justice. I seriously recommend this movie to just about anyone.

This film is highly underrated. Sure, the film is not action packed and there are no bloody massacres. Rather, this film is about how a driven man can and will, through diligence, rigor and exhausting work, achieve the truth. In the film's finest scene, Festiov relates a telephone conversation he had the night before with the FBI Director in charge of serial murders to Burakov. Turns out that the FBI has been following Burakov and the case for the past five years. Moreover, the FBI director feels that Burakov is the one person he would not want after him, so highly are the Russians methods regarded. Furthermore, and most stunning, is the fact that every class of new FBI recruits gets initiated into the world of serial killer-catching via a lecture on Burakov and his relentless pursuit of ... This film is highly underrated. Sure, the film is not action packed and there are no bloody massacres. Outstanding HBO True Crime Production CITIZEN X
I was hooked on this film from the opening scenes-- which gives me shivers even now. Based on a true story, adapted from the book 'The Killer Department', it is so much more than your average 'made for TV serial killer fare'-- and hats off to HBO for their excellent handling of a truly gruesome history. It not only tells the story of Andrei Chikatilo, Soviet Russia's most prolific serial killer, but the truly horrifying length of time it takes to put an end to this reign of terror. The Communist Party runs the show and will not provide the investigator with any of the man power or technology required to solve the case. It would amount to admitting that serial killers could actual exist in Soviet Russia. Steven Rea does a truly awesome job as the emotionally tortured and frustrated ... Besides Rea, the cast includes Max Von Sydow, and Donald Sutherland, who does a fabulous job! Joss Ackland's portrayal of the Local Communist Party Leader is splendid-- you can't help but hate him. Of special note is Jeffrey DeMunn as Chikatelo-- one of the more brilliant performances you'll ever see, as he was terrifyingly believable. I could not refrain from thinking he would be a most excellent John List. I also enjoyed Randy Edelmann's soundtrack-- suitably spooky and never over-powering. I highly recommend this film-- it gets you involved and doesn't let up. The viewer will doubtless understand the investigator's frustration with 'Red' Tape. Jaded as we are these days with forensic shows and any number of CSI programs, it is fascinating to see how things worked-- or didn't work-- in Russia 20 years ago. For fans of true crime, mystery, and serious drama, Citizen X is aces.

TRUE story of Russia's most successful Serial Killer & Justice for victims!
My Husband and I viewed Citizen X many years ago - pre FaceBook. At that time we had a 15 year old and a 6month old. Because of our overly trusting, internet loving oldest daughter, we decided to have her watch this along with us so she could (graphically) see that there really are creeps and killers out there ready and waiting to prey on girls like her. Needless to say, this TOTALLY changed her behavior drastically both online and off. Now here we are years later going through the same issues with our now 12 year old Daughter, so we bought this DVD having lost our old VHS. We have not yet had the time to sit with her and view this, but I'm sure this will leave another profound effect on this Daughter as well. This movie is a TRUE story about the only "documented" Serial Killer in the Russia.His kills were brutal and mostly on children,mostly boys.He is a true monster!I hold GREAT RESPECT for the Investigator that figured out how to find "the monstor" prior to the age of forensics, regardless of the KGB stifling him at his every move and fresh idea!I wish he was working for the US!! He'd be a great assett! This movie is extremely disturbing in itself if it was fiction but mostly nightmarish because it's FACTUAL!I'm a horror novelist myself and could not(thank God)come up with such an adversary via character!It is extremely well written with a bit of blessed sarcasm and even a few chuckles(in their own way) to alleviate the audience's torment.As i've watched this movie and researched the actual ...
