About this product

Product Information

Based on both the short story by John W. Campbell, Jr. and the 1951 film produced by Howard Hawks, THE THING is John Carpenter's stunning masterpiece of horror. A group of weary scientists enduring the winter in an isolated camp deep in Antarctica chance upon an alien spacecraft buried in the ice. Near the strange craft is the body of an alien being, frozen solid. Thinking they have made the find of a lifetime, the scientists bring the alien body back to camp and thaw it out. The alien awakens, not in the best of moods, and proceeds to take over the identities of the scientists, one by one, body and all. Helicopter pilot MacCready (Kurt Russell) must lead the surviving men in discovering who among them is human and who is not and how they can destroy "the thing" before it takes them all and moves on to the heavily populated mainland and the rest of humanity. Rob Bottin supplies the awe-inspiring special effects of the creature in its many, ever-changing forms. The effects were groundbreaking at the time and hold up flawlessly over the passing years. But Carpenter does not rely solely on special effects, utilizing his spectacular cast, which includes Wilford Brimley and Richard Dysart, to create three dimensional characters enduring an unthinkable situation. The score from Ennio Morricone is understated, yet increases the tense mood tenfold. Shooting was difficult and done in below freezing conditions, but despite the discomfort the cast and crew produced a truly terrifying film that will stand the test of time. THE THING is surely one of Carpenter's definitive films and a true horror classic.

    Good movie, a classic.

There should be a choice of widescreen view and full screen view on this and so many other DVD movies. I do not really like widescreen movies and widescreen television. Well, really good movie, a classic.

    Not a fan

Was really excited to watch this movie maybe if I went in with lower expectations it would have been better. The creature effects are awesome and fun to watch, they make it worth watching

  • Classic Sci-Fi at its Best

When I was a child, I was given a birthday gift by some close friends of my parents. They gave me a book--a Science Fiction anthology--as even then I was an avid reader (and Sci-Fi was and is my favorite reading material). One of my favorite stories in this outstanding anthology was 'Who Goes There?' by John Campbell. Imagine my delight when, years later, a movie based on this story came out. 'The Thing', directed by John Carpenter, is an absolutely great film version of this story, and isn't at all based on the earlier black and white 'The Thing from Another World' (?... or whatever it was called). The only "thing" they have in common is that a crew of men in a cold setting fight to survive against a powerful and very intelligent alien. ...

  • DVD MOVIE : THE THING ( 1998 )

Directed by John Carpenter and staring Kurt Russel, this 1982 movie gleans only 1.5 stars from Leanard Maltin and yet, I LOVE THIS MOVIE ! I had the "modified for TV" version on tape for 20 years but this DVD with the original wide screen format is SO MUCH better. Why is it better ? The music ! Yes, what the movie lacks in artistic excellence it makes up for with some VERY CREEPY MUSIC which adds a chilling effect for the watcher ! I love it ! Plus, it is such a pleasure to be able to research such a movie on the internet and then use ebay and paypal to bring it to my mailbox with expedience and economy. Mike H.

  • great classic

I luv this movie. John Carpenter directed a masterpiece. The plot seems simple but the character dynamics are what really make this movie special. Led by Kurt Russel, an American expedition team in the Artic makes an unbelievable discovery. Unknowingly, there discovery exposes them to a threat to the entire human population. This is not ur typical alien movie. This movie is full of suspense and will scare you and will keep you guessing from beginning to end. It has many moments that will make you turn your head cuz you thought you heard something. hahah You can't go wrong with this classic. If you've never seen it... do yourself a favor and pick it up. you won't be disappointed.
