  • Great Writing on Global Healthcare, Ignore the Left-Leaning if You Wish...

An engaging review of health care around the globe. Reid is at his best while waist-deep experiencing regional customs of alternative medicine. His views of American medicine are classic left-wing, however, with all its ideological and funding weaknesses. As a result, there's (unwittingly?) a little bit to make everyone happy. I purchased this book as a course requirement, and it's worthwhile as another take on the U.S. healthcare scene... even if I don't completely agree with all of his conclusions.

  • Why we must have universal coverage

You've heard him on NPR as he has lived around the world and probably read other books by T.R. Reid but this is the author writing from his heart. He strongly believes we have a moral obligation to cover every American, rich or poor. You may agree after reading this highly readable comparisons of how other rich nations have provided better coverage for lower cost than we do in the United States. I decided to buy it because my father has been in and out of hospitals this year and I have witnessed first hand some of the problems faced even by those as well insured as he is. I am not sure how the federal government will try to fix healthcare, much less whether they will succeed. I am sure that there is a problem -- make that a whole LOT of problems there.

  • Every Senator, Congressman and citizen should read this book.

This man is not a politician he is an expert in the field of health care. He traveled the world visiting successful and less successful medical systems and consolidated all the data into a rational and understandable report. The US wastes, yes throws down the toilet, too many of our medical dollars. Mr Reid visited a well run 300 bed hospital in England and asked to visit with those who handeled insurance claims. He was told "she" was out to lunch. Yes one person handled the whole thing! An equivilant in the US takes 12 people. Every Senator, Congressman and citizen should read this book to learn what options are really worth considering for change to our US healthcare system.

  • Great comparative analysis of health care systems worldwide

Lots of info re: how other countries -- developed or not -- have decided to structure their health care systems, and what virtues/disadvantages are typical of each approach.

  • The Healing of America by T. R. Reid (2009, Hardcover)

This book is intelligently written. The author uses valid examples to make his point. It would behoove this government of ours to listen instead of quibbling among themselves. The more I see of our administration, the more disheartened I become. Universal health care should be paramount. After all, isn't it "government by the people... for the people"?
