About this product

Product Information

This 1970s version of Bram Stoker's horror masterpiece originally aired as a three-part series on the BBC and is a classic adaptation of a story that captures the imagination of every generation. French character actor Louis Jordon stars as the charming bloodsucking count in this interpretation that thrilled British fans when it originally aired on Halloween night. It's a perfect addition to the body of work that captures Stoker's original vision of a lonely count living high up in his castle, with a taste for blood.

    So Happy to Have!

It's relatively faithful to the book. Although Christopher Lee is my favorite Dracula, Jourdan comes really, really close. He is a wonderful Dracula! One would not expect this performance given his filmography. Any lover of the genre and Dracula in particular will enjoy this adaptation. Wonderfully atmospheric, good acting. You almost root for the villain. Dracula utters a line about his need to feed that really makes sense; you almost want him to succeed.

  • The BEST version without question

I have waited nearly thirty years to get a broadcast-quality copy of this, the only version closely faithful to he original Stoker tale. It doesn't change or twist characters and their original roles around like every Hollywood version has. And it doesn't add any new twists to the plot line. Doesn't overly romanticize Dracula...finally a cold, calculating monster like Stoker intended, Jourdan is excellent. And it was long before CGI garbage, but has the best wall-crawling scene EVER! If you don't get a chill watching Dracula flop headfirst down the side of his castle like a bat, you ain't human. The acting is very good overall, and the BBC did an excellent job getting everything packed into an approx. two-hour time slot. Better get a copy before it disappars ...

  • Fine BBC Dracula

A memorable version, truer to the novel than the classic Lugosi movie. No eyes averted here, making the evil more evident. The special effects are a bit limited, and it does that "outside=film, inside=videotape" thing (not a favorite of mine). Louis Jourdan brings a lot of energy to the title role, and the Van Helsing is less avuncular than in the Lugosi movie. There will be blood, and when stakes are to be driven into undead hearts, the camera does not flinch. Read the book, watch this dramatization.

  • The Demon Count...

I really enjoyed this version of the count. I remember seeing this as a child and it was so scary to me, the storytelling was quite engaging and bloody-violent for being a TV program in the 70s! BBC TV shown this back in the day... I was wide-eyed with intrigue and shock. This count wasn't over the top, he was rather analytical and shrwed, had points that made scence when confronted by vanhelsing and crew about his killing... As I look on this now many, many yrs later. Though not dependent on special effects and such, it's the storytelling/acting that catches and brings you in... All the reason for the purchase and addition to the collection 30+yrs later. A wonderful digital copy of a modern classic!

  • best adaption of Brams Stoker's Dracula, EVER

superb acting, and the screenplay was a true adaption of Bram Stoker's book. Louis Jourdan nails it with his interpretation of Dracula ... and Frank Finley is perfect choice for Van Helsing. AND, there is none of that modern teenager Twilight Saga BS or Anne-Rice-esque nonsense about vampires. Vampires are depicted as for what they are ... evil, blood-thirsty soul stealing demons.
