About this product

Product Information

This 1969 Western encapsulates the genre, with dramatic chase scenes on horseback through breathtaking landscapes, daring robberies of banks and trains, true comradery between cowboys who would risk their lives for one another, and copious amounts of renegade charm. Butch Cassidy (Paul Newman) is the smart, savvy leader of The Hole in the Wall Gang, and his sidekick the Sundance Kid (Robert Redford) ranks among the best shooters the West has known. This combination of brains and menace allows the duo to roam unchallenged, staging petty robberies when needed and otherwise kicking back at the local brothel. But when a six-pack of the best cowboys in nearby states gather to bring down the rebels, using a Native American tracker to follow them across rivers, over mountains, and through deserts; Butch and Sundance decide to flee. Gathering Sundance's girlfriend (Katherine Ross), they make their way to Bolivia via New York City. Unfortunately, old habits die hard, and before they know it, the charismatic criminals find themselves in an all-too-familiar situation, this time facing South American enemies.Directed by George Roy Hill, BUTCH CASSIDY's balance of drama, action, and humor is a winning combination on its own. But this excellent tale of friendship and adventure is most successful for its talented leads, who fill every scene with wit, skill, and machismo. A broad color palette showcases glorious sunsets and peaceful rivers running through the craggy Rocky Mountains, while brief interludes of black and white still shots inject artistic flair. In every sense a classic, BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID is simply timeless.

    MOSTLY ACCURATE TO KNOWN HISTORY

The script is about as historically accurate as any Western will get. The roughly 30-minute chase scenes are a composite of several actual pursuits by various lawmen who hoped to arrest Butch and Sundance. The middle of the movie is an unusual break, with bicycle riding to the song of Burt Bacharach's "Raindrops". With increasing rapid transportation and communication of lawmen making it impossible to continue their robberies in the USA, Butch, Sundance, and Etta Place leave for South America in 1901. The movie ends in Bolivia, with Butch, Sundance, and Etta attempting to "go straight" with a purchased cattle ranch. Actually, they went to Argentina, but in 1969 this fact was not known. When a lawman from the USA is noticed asking about these outlaws, Butch and Sundance are forced to ...

  • Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid - 2 disc collector

This movie came out when I was just a wee sprout and changed the Western cinematography landscape for westerns. The disc I watched was released in 2009 and is the 2-Disc Collector's Edition; Gold O-Ring. It's a film that broke all the rules of the time and had us rooting for the bad guys. There was no good guy takes on the bad guys and beats them all, wins the girl and ride of into the sunset and they all live happily ever after. It also had a tune written by Burt Bacharach right smack dab in the middle of it - Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head. After viewing the DVD I looked at the bonus material which there is a ton of. And you get an inside glimpse at how the movie was filmed with the director pulling no punches and letting you in on the whole enchilada. Interviews with all the main ...

  • DVD: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

I was 5 years old when I went with my folks to see this movie in the theaters in 1969. Although I couldn't remember some of it, and a lot of the jokes went over my head, I enjoyed it immenseley. Skip ahead a few years, and I see it on TV, then video rental. It just seemed to get better with age. This flick started the "buddy-movie" genre and the chemistry with Newman and Redford is classic. A different kind of Western, this one had lots of joking around and fun. You root for these bad guys to get away as they are robbing trains and banks. As a "Superposse" of lawmen bear down on them they head to Bolivia and continue their lifestyle. Great movie, and that's exactly why I had to have it on DVD. I recommend the 2-disc "Ultimate Collector's edition" out in 2006. This set has a bonus DVD of ...

  • Classic movie, great price

This movie has always been one of my all time favorite westerns. Newman and Redford always work well together. I don't know why I didn't have a DVD and wanted to own it.

  • A true classic.

I have friends with thousands of DVD movies. They buy whatever comes along. I have around 20 including Rock and Simon & Garfunkel concerts. Just what I consider classics, and This is one of the great classic films of all time. I am going to repeat this same review with the other two I bought at the same time: Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid, M*A*S*H (the movie) and Little Big Man. In all cases the service and attention was flawless. I am totally satisfied. Thanx EBay and Thanx to the suppliers. Want some cash back? Click here to learn more about BigCrumbs!
