He sinned in the affair while still married but repented upon his wife, in her sinful affair being broken off, calling him home to her and their daughters. Just because the destruction of a family begins because of the weakness of mankind, does not mean that destruction has to culminate in the ruining under curse, of husband, wife and children. Numbers 14:18 (NASB) 18 'The LORD is slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, forgiving iniquity and transgression; but He will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generations.' The Lord recognizes repentance and turning again to the Only Way, Truth and Life....but continued battle again the King Jesus Christ who is that Way, the embodiment of the Law of God, which He ... Pat Conroy adapts a novel about a dysfunctional SC Southern family's traumatic events, with Barbra Streisand, into an Oscar-nominated intense role for Nick Nolte, who plays the leading man (Tom Wingo), to Streisand's (Susan Lowenstien) leading woman, NYC psychiatrist. The beginning twist is, Lowenstien is Wingo's sister's shrink who Wingo finds accidentally after his sister's suicide attempt. Wingo is not Lowenstien's client. Wingo agrees to help Lowenstien by giving her family background information to help his mentally suffering sister. It becomes harder to recall that he's not her client when his post-traumatizing repressed memories are brought forth by Lowenstien in such ways that they expose his own mid-life crises & Lownestien's. Healing each other through their therapeutic talks, ... She treats a very difficult theme, that is cinematically understudied as carefully (or perhaps carelessly overstudied!), with the utmost tenderness as both a psychiatrist in role & a director. This time, her real son plays her real son (and a violin)! Yes, for this movie, one does break out the violin.

The Prince of Tides becomes the love story between a South Carolina high school football coach, Tom Wingo, wonderfully played by Nick Nolte, and the psychiatrist in New York, Dr. Susan Lowenstein, also beautifully played by Barbra Streisand, who is treating his twin sister, Savannah, after she has tried multiple times to kill herself. Tom has troubles too--laid off from work, his wife having an affair, the mother from hell, the father from hell, but 3 beautiful small daughters. He has been summoned to New York to help Savannah's psychiatrist, Dr. Susan Lowenstein, get to the bottom of the past that has so disturbed his sister. This past does not come out easily and through lots of conversations Tom and Susan become very good friends and finally lovers. You see, Dr. Lowenstein has ... Dr. Lowenstein enlists the football skills of Tom Wingo and behind her husband's back gets him to coach their son. Tom puts the son through quite rigorous training, which he resists at first, but then grows to love. Shouldn't a psychiatrist know that children even at that age really want discipline? Of course, the father is furious. The sessions continue. The doctor and her source of information finally get to the secret event in the past of the family's horror. I am not going to disclose what that is. Once Savannah is almost recovered, what is left between Dr. Lowenstein and Tom Wingo? Can a New York psychiatrist have a lasting relationship with a South Carolina football coach? There are quite a few differences here. This movie is one of Barbra's greatest. It doesn't rank as high on my list as "The Way We Were," but Barbra and Nick are great! Nick Nolte even got an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, but did not win. There was a lot of controversy about disrimination toward Barbra as the picture's director and whether she should be nominated for an Academy Award as Best Director. It did not happen. She wasn't nominated for Best Actress either. Was this Hollywood politics at work? My only regret is that the theme song from this movie is not sung by Barbra until the end. It is so beautiful that it could have been used throughout the movie.

one of my all time favorite books by Pat Conroy was made into a movie - not an easy task with such deep subject material. nick nolte does some of his finest acting as a man who must become quite vulnerable to release a past secret that could destroy his future.
