About this product

Product Information

In what just might be the finest rock & roll concert film ever, THE LAST WALTZ celebrates the final performance by the Band (Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, Levon Helm, and Garth Hudson). The show took place on Thanksgiving Day in 1976, at San Francisco's Winterland Arena--where the group had played their very first show more than 16 years before. In order to make their farewell even more unforgettable, they recruited numerous guests to join them onstage, including Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Eric Clapton, Muddy Waters, Ronnie Hawkins, Paul Butterfield, Emmylou Harris, Neil Diamond, the Staple Singers, Dr. John, Ringo Starr, Ron Wood, and Lawrence Ferlinghetti. Martin Scorsese, a former roommate of Robbie Robertson's, employs some of the world's greatest cinematographers--including Michael Chapman, Vilmos Zsigmond, and Laszlo Kovacs--to film the set in a way that captures the show's sweat and energy with a powerful intimacy. Interspersed into the songs are a series of interviews with the Band's members, who recall their early days playing for empty bars and their emergence as major players in the rock & roll game. THE LAST WALTZ is a thrilling concert film, mandatory viewing even for those unfamiliar with the Band or rock music in general.

  • The end of the road for a memorable group.

This is a great video tribute to The Band...recorded by renowned director Martin Scorsese..and encompasses the performance not only by the title group but over a dozen performers who shared their perspectives and performances. Dylan, 'Slowhand', Joni Mitchell, Muddy Waters, Ron Wood and Ronnie Hawkins are just a few of the greats who appear...and although The Band may have eased into memory no-one who hears "The Weight" can ever forget Levon Helm's voice or drumming. In passing, yes - that really was Levon who played the role of the master gunsmith in "Shooter".

  • The Best of The Best!

This concert video must be part of the collection of every music lover. If you do, buy the Blu-ray edition. This is not just a concert of one artist/band but many giants of their days are in here. But it and enjoy!!!

  • Better quality sound and video than the Anniversary Edition, but...

Arguably the greatest of all live music movies, this blu-ray version does have MUCH better quality sound and video than the Anniversary Edition--however: The overdub commentary conversation is completely different than the dvd Anniversary Edition. This commentary is between Scorsese and Robertson. While listening to Scorsese can be fascinating, he does have a tendency to digress. This is great if you are in film-school (as it might help you on tests), but he can digress so very much...he totally forgets (or doesn't really care) that the discussion is supposed to be about THIS movie and everything related to it. Listening to Robbie still taking credit for writing all of their songs (making sure he lets us know HE wrote every song i.e.: "I wrote this song..." ...

  • No frills BluRay at a great price.

There are no extras to the packaging, compared to the special edition DVD reissue. The video transfer is very good, and the uncompressed digital sound is great.
