About this product

Product Information

Thief Gold is the special upgraded collectors' edition of Looking Glass Studios' critically acclaimed Thief: The Dark Project, a first-person "stealth" action-adventure game. The title contains three new missions along with updated versions of Thief: The Dark Project's 12 original missions, which have undergone additional tuning and play balancing. Thief Gold was developed by Looking Glass Studios and published by Eidos Interactive.

As background, Thief: The Dark Project was released in December 1998. The game revolutionized the first-person genre by using a complex environmental simulation, coupled with a sophisticated artificial intelligence system to create a rich, immersive game world that supports its core gameplay -- stealth, strategy, and suspense.

In the game, the player assumes the role of Garrett, a master thief living in an unnamed ancient city of a fictional past where magic and primitive technology uneasily coexist. The city has three main factions, the mysterious Keepers, a fanatical religious sect known as the Hammers and the Pagans. As Garrett, your victims are the city's corrupt and privileged nobility, whose wealth is at your disposal as long as their guards don't see you.

Thief Gold continues Garrett's story and adventures. Three new levels include the following:

"Thieves Guild" -- Garrett has heard that the Downwind thieves guild has pulled off a daring heist, stealing Lord Randall's Sapphire Vase. However, they are now squabbling among themselves about how to share the loot. Garrett decides to go in and steal it himself: His logic? Because of their internal arguments, they won't blame him. He intends to break in through a gambling den they operate, the Overlord's Fancy. Bold move, or just insane?

"Mage Towers" -- In the ruined city of Thief: The Dark Project, the Keeper Chapel revealed that the Mage Towers were the hiding place for the Talisman of Earth. Garrett breaks into the Mage Towers to steal the prized artifact. The Talisman of Earth is being held in the central tower of the Mage Towers, secured by spells. To free the item, Garrett must find his way through each of the towers to find the keys that will unlock the Talisman Room.

"Songs of the Caverns" -- Garrett searches for the Talisman of Water which has been hidden in an underground cavern deep below the city. However, he soon learns that someone else has already stolen the item and his only clues as to who has beat him to it are the ravings of a lunatic hermit.

On the day of Thief Gold's release, Paul Neurath, the Managing Director of Looking Glass Studios commented, "We have refined and improved the classic Thief: The Dark Project missions as well as come up with three suspenseful new levels (and a few surprises) which continue the saga of Garrett."

Thief Gold also includes an AVI movie, The Making of Thief 2: The Metal Age, which features interviews with many of the Thief development team members.

  • Mindblowing, riveting suspense submersed in a stealthy world of intrigue

Hands down thief GOLD is the best pc game I have ever played, even up to todays standards. I have played hundreds of pc games and console games and after all this time thief gold simply blows all others out of the water. I cannot express this enough to any other game enthusiasts out there. If you like role playing games mixed with stealth and a fantastic story line then this is for you. I completely agree with the other 2 reviews in all regards. The other thief games were a bit of a let down but thief gold is something that all games of this genre should aspire to. The graphics are old but who cares with such a rich and vibrant story line mixed with an atmosphere like no other. I literally jumped in my seat the first time I played this game and the guards found me! I love this game so much ...

  • Thief Gold.... the unforgettable adventures of Garret

Thief 2 the metal age had one of the worst storylines and a the constant sniveling whiney voice of the bad guy was utterly annoying... Thief 3 deadly shadows had weird map section loads that lagged, and a ho-hum storyline and and evil boss witch that you couldnt kill... only run away from. Oh, and lets not forget its HORRIBLE rag doll effects that turned everyone into rubber. --- Now THIEF GOLD is a completely different animal. A fantastic adventure of unforgetable characters. Sure, the game graphics are a bit outdated by todays comparissons, but the imagination that went into the twisting plot and the fantastic atmosphere makes for an adventure you won't forget. Thief is a game that is unique to all other games, as it isn't DOOM style of run and shoot everything that ...

  • Updated version of a classic trilogy - Thief

This was my favorite game in 1999 and it is still my favorite game in 2009. Although there are resources available online to get the original versions to run on newer systems, it was IMO simply not worth the time expenditure and frustration involved. It was simply easier to pay a few bucks for the updated version. Normally, I would never consider paying twice for a game; however, I make an exception for the THIEF series as it was simply the best gaming experience for me ever.
