Davis' rhythm section+alto giant = this is what you get
January, 1957. Art Pepper, with his horn broken, not having played for more than 2 weeks, is faced with a huge challenge, till the last moment unknown to him- recording an album with THE rhythm section of those days, Miles Davis' co-players, the pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers and Phillie Jo Jones on drums. The Davis' band just played a gig there and Pepper's manager decided to book them for one recording session, feeling that Art is yet to play with someone of the same genius as he was. It was, though, in order to prevent anxiety and nervousness, kept in secret and Art got to know about it only a short time before the session was to start. He stood up to the challenge, taped his horn up and came to the session. The first song of the album "You'd Be ... January, 1957. The first song of the album "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To" was the first song to be recorded, they just picked the tune and jammed and this is what came out. After the successful first take, 8 other tracks were recorded and few days later this album was released. To me the album was excelent, considering the conditions and the circumstances of the recording, the music that came out of the session is full of energy, though not in amazing tempos, with Pepper's own style of playing. The rhythm section certainly is THE rhythm section, they played and swinged like one man. I certainly do recommend this recording as being one of the best Art Pepper's albums. I guess my favorite track is the first one, but I also like Star Eyes. But I think all the tunes are beautiful, and you will not regret listening to the record.
