The World is just the Start of It
One night I fell asleep on the couch. I woke up just as this film was beginning on TV. It took a long time to figure out if I was still dreaming my own dream or just caught up in Wim Wenders'. I could not stop watching this movie. Each of the main characters -- Solveig Dommartin, William Hurt, and Sam Neil -- epitomize basic emotions of love, longing, perseverance and commitment. This is not a film for all tastes. You really need to get into it and be a part of it. But I'll tell you, it made me a fan of Sam Neil, whom I hadn't seen before, and deepened my admiration of William Hurt. And Solveig Dommartin, what can you say, just captivating. (I only learned the other day that she died in January of this year. Very sad.) If you love movies and movie-making, take a chance on this film.One night I fell asleep on the couch. Wim Wenders' Until the End of the World
Although director Wim Wenders deeply disliked this cut, Until the End of the World remains one of our favorite movies. Hauntingly prescient in its use of technology, the film is full of beautiful, surreal images. Excellent cast includes William Hurt, Solveig Dommartin and Sam Neil. The story is complicated and multi-layered, involving central themes of romantic love, self invention, memories, dreams and desire. Check out the soundtrack (available separately on CD) which has a great mix of rock and blues including the title song by U2.Although director Wim Wenders deeply disliked this cut, Until the End of the World remains one of our favorite movies.
