Set against the background of the French Revolution and based on Victor Hugo's classic novel this is the story of Jean Valjean who is sent to prison for stealing a loaf of bread and is released after nineteen years. He meets and cares for a beautiful but poverty-stricken young girl named Fantine who has daughter Cosette. After Fantine's death Valjean brings Cosette up but he is haunted by Javert - a policeman whose search for Valjean has become an obsession.

John Owen-Jones brings great heart, passion and a tremendous voice to the tormented Jean Valjean, who escapes from the chain-gang only to be hunted down by the remorseless policeman Javert, given a memorably sinister, doom-laden performance by Earl Carpenter. The latterÆs final exit is perhaps the most spectacular in modern theatre., DVD Verdict - Veteran stage actors Alfie Boe and Norm Lewis do a magnificent with the roles of Valjean and Javert respectively, as does Ramin Karimloo as the rebellious Enjolras.

    A special performance for those who know and love Les Mis, ruined by Jonas!

    I bought this DVD having not seen the musical although I was familiar with the songs. I would really recommend this for fans of the musical, all of the roles are played by superb singers which makes it a celebration of the show. There is one exception, Nick Jonas, whose nasal wailing just can't compare to the excellence of the others, in my opinion he spoiled it, obviously added to attract teenage girls. You should be aware that only the songs are performed, additional storyline details and scenery changes have not been added so you won't really know what is going on in the story if you have not seen the stage version. That said, the music and vocal performances are emphasized by the lack of fussy details.

    do not miss this !!!

    I bought this dvd as I am a big fan.my god I thought the 10th anniv.dvd was good but this one is superb.i loved every minute of it with the slight exception of the man who played javert he didn't sit as well in the role as Philip Quast did but that is just personal choice.after being sorely disappointed with the recent film this dvd more than made up for that-yes I would buy this dvd again in a heartbeat in fact I will probably have to when I wear it out.

    A must for all Les Mis fans

    Some friends of mine showed me this DVD as a preamble for us all going to see the film together. I'd never seen the show on stage (my friends had), so didn't know the story, although I was familiar with some of the songs. I loved this performance on this DVD and loved the film. As a result I bought this special edition for myself so I could relive the songs. The extra items on the special edition DVD are also interesting, although I'd see the film of Matt Lucas getting and singing the part of the innkeeper already on TV. I can thoroughly recommend this DVD, Alfie Boe, in particular, is fantastic. Even if you haven't see it on stage, the production is so good (and of course most of this musical is sung anyway), you easily get an idea of the story.

    Sadness and joy, real life experience, brilliant visuals and music

    I did not have the opportunity to go to the live show. This DVD had atmosphere and it was as though we were at the show even though we were in our lounge. Clearly the production live was brilliant and the DVD did nothing to spoil that affect. I can recommend the DVD for its visual quality and exceptional sound quality, bearing in mind I used my Bose speakers. At first I felt the production was a bit slow but that was because I needed to understand the story line.

    Very good music.

    Actually purchased in error, thought it was the film. None the less, it was enjoyable. This is the only music to a musical that we have ever purchased, therefore cannot compare to any other.
